Job description

Golf Course Superintendent

The Golf Course Superintendent oversees the maintenance of the golf course and ensures that turfgrass is repaired and maintained to established standards.

Our 18-hole championship golf course is privately owned and operated by one family, providing a stable, hands-on ownership environment with a strong commitment to the long-term success and continued improvement of the golf course.

The owner also serves as the General Manager of the golf course, providing direct leadership and communication with the Superintendent. This structure allows for efficient decision-making, open communication, and the ability to work directly with ownership on agronomic priorities, capital improvements, course conditions, and the overall direction of the property.

Our golf course features Zorro Zoysia grass fairways and MiniVerde Bermuda greens. We are proud to be one of the farthest north courses in Virginia to offer MiniVerde Bermuda greens, creating unique agronomic challenges associated with managing warm-season turfgrass in a cooler climate.

We are seeking an experienced Golf Course Superintendent with demonstrated knowledge and hands-on experience managing Zorro Zoysia and MiniVerde Bermuda, particularly in the cooler regions of the United States. Experience successfully maintaining warm-season grasses through cooler temperatures, winter conditions, spring transition, and recovery periods is highly desirable.

The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of the unique agronomic requirements of Zorro Zoysia fairways and MiniVerde Bermuda greens and will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive turfgrass management program designed to maximize playing conditions, turf health, and long-term sustainability.

This position will also provide the opportunity to work alongside our experienced Superintendent, who has been with the golf course through the many changes and improvements made over the past 23 years. His extensive knowledge of the property, its turfgrass, maintenance practices, history, and past projects will provide an invaluable resource for the successful candidate.

The golf course is also preparing for a major tee box renovation project, and we are looking for a Superintendent with the experience and vision to help oversee the resurfacing of our tee boxes with Zorro Zoysia grass. Experience with Zoysia establishment, sod installation, renovation projects, grow-in, and long-term management is strongly preferred.

Experience Required
  • Bachelor's degree, Associate's degree, or equivalent from college or technical school; or three to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Degree preference in agronomy, horticulture, plant science, or soil science.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of winter preparation, spring transition, turf recovery, fertility, irrigation, cultural practices, and disease management associated with warm-season grasses in northern climates.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Pesticide Application License or ability to obtain within 90 days.
  • Ability to read and speak English and Spanish is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Regularly lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds.
Essential Responsibilities
  • Maintain championship-quality greens, tees, fairways, roughs, and bunkers.
  • Assist the Superintendent in preparation and execution of the annual golf course maintenance budget and capital plans.
  • Supervise and assist maintenance staff in daily duties.
  • Supervise the cultural practices involved in growing and maintaining various turfgrasses.
  • Keep records of all chemical and fertilizer applications.
  • Ensure maintenance equipment is properly maintained.
  • Implement sound purchasing procedures utilizing preferred vendors when possible.
  • Ensure all company policies and procedures are followed, including compliance with government regulations.
  • Ensure proper training and/or licenses are obtained to perform job tasks safely and within regulations.
  • Address all real or perceived environmental concerns.
  • Ensure proper mixing, calibration, and application of all chemicals and fertilizers used on the course.
  • Work closely with the existing Superintendent and maintenance leadership to ensure continuity of agronomic practices, course knowledge, and long-term maintenance goals.
  • Ensure effective orientation and training for each new associate.
  • Develop and conduct ongoing training programs.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Incorporate safe work practices in job performance.
Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be a hands-on, highly motivated turfgrass professional with a strong agronomic background and a passion for maintaining championship-quality playing conditions.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Superintendent or an Assistant Superintendent who wants to work in a family-owned, hands-on golf operation, have direct communication with ownership, and play a significant role in the continued improvement and future development of the golf course.
