Position Overview
The Global Students & Experiences Coordinator serves as the primary student-facing program coordinator within Global Students and Experiences (GS&E), leading the development, implementation, and oversight of international student programs and services. This role integrates student engagement, program coordination, and immigration compliance functions to support a cohesive and comprehensive approach to international and exchange student success.
In addition, the position includes oversight of study abroad exchange operations and programming, resulting in a comprehensive scope of responsibility across inbound and outbound student experiences, program delivery, and engagement initiatives. Serving as a key point of contact for international and exchange students, the Coordinator contributes directly to student experience, regulatory compliance, program effectiveness, and student retention.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
A. International Student Programs and Engagement
- Develop and implement cultural, social, and orientation programming
- Lead and implement Global Triton Welcome new international student orientation and ongoing student engagement initiatives
- Coordinate campus-wide programming supporting international students
- Lead the implementation and coordination of Globalpalooza
- Oversee engagement initiatives that support international student integration and campus involvement
- Collaborate with student organizations and leadership groups to promote participation and community-building efforts
- Design and implement programs and initiatives that promote international student retention, persistence, and overall success
B. Exchange Program Coordination
- Oversee processes that support the full exchange program lifecycle, including nomination, application, acceptance, enrollment, preparation, on-site support, and re-entry for inbound and outbound exchange students
- Serve as a primary point of contact for affiliate study abroad programs and exchange partner institutions, fostering effective communication and partnership engagement
- Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with exchange partner institutions to support successful student placement, program continuity, and collaboration
- Communicate nomination and application deadlines, exchange balances, cost estimates, admissions and visa requirements with partner institutions, and maintain Triton Globetrotter exchange program brochures with current partner institution details
- Coordinate closely with immigration compliance processes to ensure exchange student participation aligns with visa regulatory requirements and institutional policies
- Collaborate with Academic Advising, Colleges and Schools, and the Registrar's Office to ensure timely and accurate course equivalency approvals and credit transfer for outbound exchange and study abroad students
- Maintain accurate records in Terra Dotta software for all study abroad and exchange students and programs
C. Study Abroad Programming and Outreach
- Plan and execute study abroad-related programming, including:
- Pre-departure orientations
- Re-entry programming
- Study Abroad Fairs and outreach events
- Class visits, information sessions, and tabling events
- Promote study abroad opportunities to campus stakeholders
- Support recruitment and participation growth
- Provide general information to students and faculty regarding study abroad and exchange program options, timelines, costs, and deadlines, referring detailed advising inquiries to the Associate Director of Global Experiences
- Maintain knowledge of existing programs to support accurate communication and efficient coordination of processes
- Monitor exchange participation trends and provide input on program development and improvement opportunities
D. International Student Support and Study Abroad Advising
- Serve as primary point of contact for international and inbound exchange students, providing guidance on engagement, programming, and student experience
- Advise and support outbound exchange and study abroad students regarding program identification and selection, academic planning, finances, health and safety, and cultural preparation
- Provide guidance on engagement, programming, and student experience
- Coordinate response to international student concerns in collaboration with campus partners (e.g. UMSL Cares, Residential Life, and Health and Wellness), facilitating appropriate referrals and resolution pathways, and using sound judgment to elevate concerns to GS&E and Student Affairs leadership and crisis response teams
- Serve as a key point of contact for student concerns, facilitating appropriate referrals and resolution pathways
- Maintain awareness of student trends and needs to proactively support student success and well-being
- Support outbound students experiencing concerns while abroad by coordinating with host institutions to secure appropriate assistance, monitoring situations to resolution, and elevating complex or high-risk cases to appropriate leadership
- Coordinate and deliver pre-departure orientation and preparation programming for outbound study abroad and exchange students
- Support onboarding and readiness initiatives for inbound F-1 and J-1 students, including Visa Interview Preparation sessions and Pre-Departure Orientation sessions for incoming F-1 and J-1 students to support successful entry to the United States and transition to the UMSL community
- Utilize student engagement and support strategies to promote retention and persistence among international and exchange students
E. Leadership and Coordination
- Supervise student workers and program leaders
- Coordinate advisory boards and student organizations
- Represent GS&E to campus stakeholders and external partners
- Serve as a primary representative of GS&E in campus-wide initiatives related to international student engagement and support
- Build and maintain collaborative partnerships with campus units including Student Affairs, Academic Colleges, Enrollment Management, and Student Support Services to support international student success
F. Immigration and Compliance Coordination
- Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO), issuing initial and continued Forms I-20 and ensuring compliance with federal F-1 visa regulations
- Serve as an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), supporting J-1 exchange visitor processes and regulatory compliance
- Maintain accurate SEVIS records and ensure timely reporting and updates in accordance with federal requirements
- Monitor student immigration status and documentation to ensure compliance with F-1 and J-1 visa regulations
- Provide guidance to international and exchange students regarding immigration requirements, status maintenance, and institutional policies
- Coordinate with campus partners and external stakeholders to ensure consistent application of immigration-related policies and procedures
- Support institutional compliance with federal regulations, including documentation, reporting, and audit readiness
- Provide guidance to students on routine F-1 and J-1 immigration regulations, referring complex cases or regulatory exceptions to the Manager of International Student Support Services and/or Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) as appropriate
- Coordinate onboarding processes for international and exchange students, including arrival check-in and documentation verification
- Ensure continuous monitoring and updating of student records throughout the student lifecycle
G. Professional Contributions and Leadership
- Participate in departmental projects, committees, and initiatives
- Provide mentorship or supervision to student workers as needed
- Identify and recommend process improvements
- Engage in professional development opportunities such as NAFSA or the Forum on Education Abroad
H. Other Duties as Assigned
The successful candidate will serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) and must meet all applicable federal eligibility requirements; U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency is required per Department of Homeland Security regulations.
Shift
Typical office hours are maintained, with the added benefit of working in a vibrant in-office environment. This role requires flexibility with frequent night and weekend obligations due to program events and activities.
Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary
Preferred Qualifications
- While no specific major is required, degrees in international relations, international affairs, higher education, communications, event planning, hospitality management, or a related field are preferred
- Minimum of three years of work experience preferred; one to three years of customer-facing service, international education, and/or event planning experience preferred
- Study abroad, living abroad, or other significant international experience preferred
- Strong public speaking and presentation skills in both in-person and virtual settings
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities effectively and efficiently
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with students, faculty, staff, and external partners
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
Anticipated Hiring Range
$54,000 - $59,000
