Job Description
Position Overview
The Global Students & Experiences Coordinator serves as theprimary student-facing program coordinator within Global Studentsand Experiences (GS&E), leading the development,implementation, and oversight of international student programs andservices. This role integrates student engagement, programcoordination, and immigration compliance functions to support acohesive and comprehensive approach to international and exchangestudent success. In addition, the position includes oversight of study abroadexchange operations and programming, resulting in a comprehensivescope of responsibility across inbound and outbound studentexperiences, program delivery, and engagement initiatives. Servingas a key point of contact for international and exchange students,the Coordinator contributes directly to student experience,regulatory compliance, program effectiveness, and studentretention.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
A. International Student Programs and Engagement
- Develop and implement cultural, social, and orientationprogramming
- Lead and implement Global Triton Welcome new international studentorientation and ongoing student engagement initiatives
- Coordinate campus-wide programming supporting internationalstudents
- Lead the implementation and coordination of Globalpalooza
- Oversee engagement initiatives that support international studentintegration and campus involvement
- Collaborate with student organizations and leadership groups topromote participation and community-building efforts
- Design and implement programs and initiatives that promoteinternational student retention, persistence, and overallsuccess
B. Exchange Program Coordination
- Oversee processes that support the full exchange program lifecycle,including nomination, application, acceptance, enrollment,preparation, on-site support, and re-entry for inbound and outboundexchange students
- Serve as a primary point of contact for affiliate study abroadprograms and exchange partner institutions, fostering effectivecommunication and partnership engagement
- Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with exchange partnerinstitutions to support successful student placement, programcontinuity, and collaboration
- Communicate nomination and application deadlines, exchangebalances, cost estimates, admissions and visa requirements withpartner institutions, and maintain Triton Globetrotter exchangeprogram brochures with current partner institution details
- Coordinate closely with immigration compliance processes to ensureexchange student participation aligns with visa regulatoryrequirements and institutional policies
- Collaborate with Academic Advising, Colleges and Schools, and theRegistrar’s Office to ensure timely and accurate course equivalencyapprovals and credit transfer for outbound exchange and studyabroad students
- Maintain accurate records in Terra Dotta software for all studyabroad and exchange students and programs
C. Study Abroad Programming and Outreach
- Plan and execute study abroad-related programming, including:
- Pre-departure orientations
- Re-entry programming
- Study Abroad Fairs and outreach events
- Class visits, information sessions, and tabling events
- Promote study abroad opportunities to campus stakeholders
- Support recruitment and participation growth
- Provide general information to students and faculty regarding studyabroad and exchange program options, timelines, costs, anddeadlines, referring detailed advising inquiries to the AssociateDirector of Global Experiences
- Maintain knowledge of existing programs to support accuratecommunication and efficient coordination of processes
- Monitor exchange participation trends and provide input on programdevelopment and improvement opportunities
D. International Student Support and Study AbroadAdvising
- Serve as primary point of contact for international and inboundexchange students, providing guidance on engagement, programming,and student experience
- Advise and support outbound exchange and study abroad studentsregarding program identification and selection, academic planning,finances, health and safety, and cultural preparation
- Provide guidance on engagement, programming, and studentexperience
- Coordinate response to international student concerns incollaboration with campus partners (e.g. UMSL Cares, ResidentialLife, and Health and Wellness), facilitating appropriate referralsand resolution pathways, and using sound judgment to escalatoconsequences to GS&E and Student Affairs leadership and crisisresponse teams
- Serve as a key point of contact for student concerns, facilitatingappropriate referrals and resolution pathways
- Maintain awareness of student trends and needs to proactivelysupport student success and well-being
- Support outbound students experiencing concerns while abroad bycoordinating with host institutions to secure appropriateassistance, monitoring situations to resolution, and elevatingcomplex or high-risk cases to appropriate leadership
- Coordinate and deliver pre-departure orientation and preparationprogramming for outbound study abroad and exchange students
- Support onboarding and readiness initiatives for inbound F-1 andJ-1 students, including Visa Interview Preparation sessions andPre-Departure Orientation sessions for incoming F-1 and J-1students to support successful entry to the United States andtransition to the UMSL community
- Utilize student engagement and support strategies to promoteretention and persistence among international and exchangestudents
E. Leadership and Coordination
- Supervise student workers and program leaders
- Coordinate advisory boards and student organizations
- Represent GS&E to campus stakeholders and externalpartners
- Serve as a primary representative of GS&E in campus-wideinitiatives related to international student engagement andsupport
- Build and maintain collaborative partnerships with campus unitsincluding Student Affairs, Academic Colleges, EnrollmentManagement, and Student Support Services to support internationalstudent success
F. Immigration and Compliance Coordination
- Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO), issuing initial andcontinued Forms I-20 and ensuring compliance with federal F-1 visaregulations
- Serve as an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), supporting J-1exchange visitor processes and regulatory compliance
- Maintain accurate SEVIS records and ensure timely reporting andupdates in accordance with federal requirements
- Monitor student immigration status and documentation to ensurecompliance with F-1 and J-1 visa regulations
- Provide guidance to international and exchange students regardingimmigration requirements, status maintenance, and institutionalpolicies
- Coordinate with campus partners and external stakeholders to ensureconsistent application of immigration-related policies andprocedures
- Support institutional compliance with federal regulations,including documentation, reporting, and audit readiness
- Provide guidance to students on routine F-1 and J-1 immigrationregulations, referring complex cases or regulatory exceptions tothe Manager of International Student Support Services and/orPrincipal Designated School Official (PDSO) as appropriate
- Coordinate onboarding processes for international and exchangestudents, including arrival check-in and documentationverification
- Ensure continuous monitoring and updating of student recordsthroughout the student lifecycle
G. Professional Contributions and Leadership
- Participate in departmental projects, committees, andinitiatives
- Provide mentorship or supervision to student workers asneeded
- Identify and recommend process improvements
- Engage in professional development opportunities such as NAFSA orthe Forum on Education Abroad
H. Other Duties as Assigned
The successful candidate will serve as a Designated School Official(DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) and must meet allapplicable federal eligibility requirements; U.S. citizenship orlawful permanent residency is required per Department of HomelandSecurity regulations.
Shift
Typical office hours are maintained, with the added benefit ofworking in a vibrant in-office environment. This role requiresflexibility with frequent night and weekend obligations due toprogram events and activities.
Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education andexperience and at least 3 years of experience from which comparableknowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary
Preferred Qualifications
- While no specific major is required, degrees in internationalrelations, international affairs, higher education, communications,event planning, hospitality management, or a related field arepreferred
- Minimum of three years of work experience preferred; one tothree years of customer-facing service, international education,and/or event planning experience preferred
- Study abroad, living abroad, or other significant internationalexperience preferred
- Strong public speaking and presentation skills in bothin-person and virtual settings
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail, withthe ability to manage multiple responsibilities effectively andefficiently
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectivelywith students, faculty, staff, and external partners
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
Anticipated Hiring Range
$54,000 - $59,000
