Job summary

East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania is seeking Global Relations Student Mentors to guide a group of new international students at ESU. Mentors provide information, cultural guidance, and support fostering academic and social adjustment during the first year.

Responsibilities include maintaining regular contact, organizing weekly meetings, and coordinating with Student Success Coaches to ensure mentees engage with campus resources and feel connected to the university community.

Qualifications

• Maintain a 2.75 GPA during appointment.
• Complete Study Abroad – Outgoing Experience.
• No disciplinary sanctions.
• Complete PeerMentor certification & Study Abroad Services training.
• Current ESU student in good academic/disciplinary standing.

• Be primary contact for exchange student and provide information/guidance.
• Serve as cultural guide for mentees.
• Assist international students in transitioning to ESU life.
• Establish positive relationships with mentees and other new students.
• Share tips on navigating campus and ESU expectations.
• Refer mentees to campus resources when needed.
• Schedule and facilitate weekly group meetings; submit summaries.
• Maintain mentor hours and track attendance.
• Coordinate with Student Success Coach for triage on cases.

Global Relations Student Mentor

Job Summary

A GlobalRelations Peer Mentor is an experienced and thoughtful student leader who iscommitted to investing one’s time to assist in the growth and development ofothers. The mentor is willing to share their knowledge, experience, and wisdomand act as a guide and role model. A peer mentor supports and encourages theacademic and social development of their mentees and provides active support tohelp them with adjusting to the ESU/college environment. The peer mentor offersa fresh perspective and an independent point of view, while helping the menteeto succeed.

The GlobalRelations Peer Mentor program is seeking peer mentors for the upcoming academicyear. As the Global Relations Peer Mentor, you will help guide a group ofapproximately 30+ new international students during their first year at ESU.This connection begins during the semester before the student enrolls at ESUand works in tandem with the Student Success Coaches throughout the year. Theprimary mission of the Global Relations Peer Mentor Program is to ease thetransition of new international students to East Stroudsburg University so thatthey may succeed personally, socially, and academically. Additionally, theprogram helps each new international student connect with other students, thefaculty, student organizations, and staff offering support resources, andultimately the institution as a whole.

Job Duties

• Be a primary contact person for anexchange student and will provide information and guidance.
• Serve as a cultural guide.
• Help an exchange student to transitioninto life at ESU.
• Become acquainted with all students in theirgroup and other new students and establish positive relationships. Contactthe new student (usually via email) while still in his/her home university,immediately after being matched.
• Provide the student with an idea ofwhat is expected of an ESU student and to share tips about navigating thecampus.
• To help refer exchange students tosomeone on campus who is able to provide specific information when needed.
• Set positive examples for others in personal,academic, and social behavior.
• Help build rapport each time he or she meetswith a mentee.
• Offer opportunities to solve problems andexchange ideas.
• Provide feedback that is honest, open andpositive.
• Present opportunities to the mentee that he/shemay not have recognized on his/her own.
• Provide suggestions to the best of one’sknowledge that help the mentee succeed in the program.
• Participate in all the cultural eventsand stude nt engagement activities planned by the Study Abroad Services program forexchange students and buddies.
• Discuss and monitor engagement for each of the assigned menteesbased on expectations outlined by the Associate Provost for Student Success.
• Schedule, facilitate and prepare summaries of weeklymeetings with your group and submit them in a timely manner to the AssociateProvost for Student Success.
• Maintain individual mentor hours that need to belogged timely.
• Track attendance for all events and meetings.
• Contact the Associate Provost for StudentSuccess immediately when faced with situations that the mentor cannot handle.
• Connect at least bi-weekly with your StudentSuccess Coach in your college for triage on student cases.

Job Requirements

• Have and maintain a 2.75 GPA during the time ofappointment.
• Successfully completed a Study Abroad – OutgoingExperience.
• Remain free of disciplinary sanctions.
• Complete the training modules for the PeerMentor certification and the Study Abroad Services program.
• Current ESU Student in good academic and disciplinarystanding.
• Basic computer skills.
• Experience in customer service.
• Ability to skillfully complete clerical work.

Additional Information

• Hourly Rate $13.00
• Note: Students will receive a digital badge at the end of their first semester as a Global Relations Peer Mentor.
