Job summary

World Health Organization is seeking a senior public health surveillance expert to provide strategic guidance and technical support across multiple countries. The role focuses on strengthening surveillance systems, risk assessment, and epidemiology capacities within a diverse, international context.

Ideal candidates will have an advanced degree and substantial field experience, including outbreak response and One Health collaboration, with proficiency in English and broad international exposure.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree in public health, epidemiology or preventive medicine is essential.
• Seven+ years in managing or strengthening public health surveillance, including epidemic/pandemic contexts.
• International experience in multicultural environments is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic advice to strengthen multi-source surveillance and guide decision making during emergencies.
• Review and assess national surveillance systems to inform planning and strengthen capabilities.
• Collaborate with country authorities to develop action plans for surveillance and epidemiology capacity.
• Develop, review, and revise guidelines, SOPs, and protocols for surveillance, risk assessment, and investigations.
• Introduce innovative or non-traditional surveillance approaches to improve performance.
• Build capacities for risk assessment of acute public health events.
• Strengthen field epidemiology, data management and analytics in collaboration with colleagues.
• Advance One Health in surveillance and risk assessment at the human–animal–environment interface.
• Strengthen health information systems for surveillance and interoperability.
• Support regional public health intelligence and incident management deployments.
• Represent WHO at technical meetings and contribute to proposals and reports.
