Job summary

Apple, Inc. in Los Angeles is seeking a Strategic Design Engineer to lead global mechanical sourcing. You will collaborate with engineering to drive cost-out while maintaining performance, define sustainable sourcing strategies, and build robust supplier relationships for cost, quality, and capacity.

This role requires deep knowledge of product development gates, FATP and should-cost modeling, and the ability to influence across multi-functional teams while traveling about 20–50% as needed.

Qualifications

• BS in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or related field.
• Intimate knowledge of a typical stage/gate product development process.
• Strong technical background; quickly understand design, manufacturing, assembly and testing to scale.
• Factory experience in forming/finishing plastics, composites, and metal.
• FATP experience, ideally within consumer electronics.
• Deep expertise with should-cost modeling and a costed BOM.
• Strong PM skills; manage diverse activities with multiple stakeholders.
• Excellent presentation and interpersonal skills in multinational environments.
• Excellent soft skills; flexible to dynamic environments.
• Ability to travel ~20% internationally, ~30% domestically.

Responsibilities

• Engage with engineering teams early to drive architecture toward cost targets.
• Define cost-aware architecture with suppliers during early development.
• Investigate alternate manufacturing processes, materials, designs, and suppliers to reduce cost.
• Manage mechanicals cost BOM and push cost-saving alternatives.
• Collaborate with Ops to assess FATP impact and optimize.
• Identify supplier partners to secure quality, supply and cost.
• Develop supplier relationships to align with strategic needs.
• Drive special cost projects scalable across Apple products.
• Liaise with cross-functional teams to support quality and capacity.
