Job summary
Canonical is seeking a General Counsel to lead the global Legal and Compliance function, reporting to the COO. The role calls for exceptional, commercially-minded leadership to guide licensing, contracts, and risk across EMEA and the Americas.
You will own Canonical's legal, regulatory and governance posture, work closely with product/engineering teams, and advise the Board. Remote in EMEA time zones with international travel.
Qualifications
- Active license to practice in an EMEA or Americas jurisdiction.
- Substantial senior in‑house experience in a global technology or software business.
- Experience leading a distributed legal team across regions and time zones.
- Proven ability to hire, develop, and manage high‑performance legal teams.
- Experience building/restructuring an in‑house function and interacting with external counsel.
Responsibilities
- Lead Canonical's global Legal and Compliance function across EMEA and the Americas.
- Own corporate governance, structures, policies, and controls in partnership with Finance.
- Advise the CEO, COO, CFO and Board; support Board and committee meetings.
- Manage commercial contracting framework and open source licensing strategy.
- Oversee data protection, export controls, anti‑bribery, competition, and AI regulation.
- Lead litigation, regulatory engagement, and interactions with external counsel.
- Provide guidance on M&A, partnerships, and financing as the company grows.
