Job summary

Ookla is seeking a Site Reliability Engineer to join our Platform and SRE team. You will build, maintain, and operate a massive-scale global infrastructure used by hundreds of millions of users.

Focus areas include performance, scalability, reliability, observability, and security across cloud, container, and serverless ecosystems. You will collaborate with software and data teams, improve deployment pipelines, and provide operational guidance while supporting on-call duties in a 24x7

Qualifications

• 4+ years Systems/Platform engineering experience.
• Experience building globally-distributed systems.
• Strong security practices knowledge.
• IaC: Terraform, CloudFormation.
• Git/GitHub for source control.
• Config management: Chef or Ansible.
• Container architectures: Docker/Kubernetes.
• Proficiency in languages: Typescript, Go, Python, PHP, Ruby, Java.
• Experience with AWS and other cloud platforms.
• SQL and query performance analysis.
• Able to learn new technologies in a fast-changing environment.
• Strong communication and time management skills.

Responsibilities

• Maintain distributed global cloud infrastructure supporting billions of requests daily.
• Manage transactional databases: MySQL, PostgreSQL, RDS/Aurora.
• Support NoSQL stores like DynamoDB and MongoDB.
• Build data streams with Kinesis or Kafka.
• Support Spark-based big data toolchains.
• Provide 24x7 on-call production support.
• Offer architectural and operational guidance to engineers.
• Support software and data teams with best practices.
• Oversee security programs: patching, IDS/IPS, pen-testing.
• Assist deployment pipelines from dev to prod.
• Provide monitoring and observability tooling guidance.
• Help development teams troubleshoot issues.
