Job summary

Smithfield Foods is seeking an experienced Automation & Controls leader in Virginia to drive the development, validation, and standardization of controls architectures, PLCs, HMIs, and networks across global operations. You will partner with U.S., China, and WH Group teams to transfer proven automation technologies and scale them across facilities, while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

The role requires leading equipment qualification, collaboration with OEMs, and driving

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Controls/Automation or related field and 5+ years in industrial automation
Strong knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, industrial networking, controls architecture, and machine safety
Experience qualifying and validating manufacturing equipment
Experience with robotics, machine vision, inspection technologies, and safety systems
Willingness to travel domestically >50% and internationally as required

Responsibilities

Lead development and standardization of controls architectures, PLCs, HMIs, and networks across global operations
Lead qualification, validation, and acceptance testing of automation, robotics, and machine vision systems
Conduct machine safety assessments and controls reviews ensuring OSHA/ANSI compliance
Partner with U.S., China, and WH Group teams to transfer technologies and best practices
Collaborate with OEMs and tech developers to deploy next-generation automation and AI-enabled inspection
Evaluate processing and packaging equipment for scalability and reliability across facilities
