Job summary

Lyte Fiber is seeking a detail-oriented GIS Fiber Designer to create low-level fiber designs and maintain network records. The role uses Vetro, QGIS, ArcGIS Pro, and AutoCAD to convert field data into construction-ready designs for SMB, MDU, and greenfield projects.

The designer collaborates with field engineers to ensure designs match field conditions, manages bills of materials, and supports permitting with accurate construction prints. Houston-based, desk-driven position.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in GIS or equivalent experience preferred.
• At least 2 years designing fiber optic outside plant in GIS.
• Proficiency in Vetro and ArcGIS Pro required; ESRI Field Maps experience a plus.

Job description

Position Description:The GIS Fiber Designer produces low-level fiber designs and maintains network records for Lyte Fiber. This is a desk-based design role. The GIS Fiber Designer works in Vetro, QGIS, and ArcGIS Pro, AutoCAD, and builds designs from data collected by field engineers in ESRI Field Maps. Assigned work covers SMB, MDU, and small projects such as greenfield subdivisions and short route extensions. The GIS Fiber Designer is the design counterpart to the field engineer. The field engineer collects the conditions. The GIS Fiber Designer turns that collection into a construction-ready design and an accurate record. The ideal candidate is detail driven, comfortable with spatial data, and motivated to grow and learn.Duties and Responsibilities:GIS Design and DraftingProduce low-level fiber designs for SMB, MDU, and small greenfield projects, including route, fiber counts, structures, terminals, and splicing.Design both aerial and underground routes using GIS design tools.Convert field notes, sketches, photos, and field-collected geometry into complete designs. Redline existing designs when field conditions change.Ensure Design is in line with Lyte Fiber design standards and material catalog.Generate bills of material, splice sheets, and construction prints required for permitting, construction, and record keeping.Produce permit exhibits and drawing sets for the permitting team.Use QGIS and ArcGIS Pro for parcel and address analysis, serviceability review, route planning, and map production.Field Data Intake and RecordsPull data collected by field engineers in ESRI Field Maps and load it into Vetro and the design environment.Review incoming field data for completeness before design starts. Return incomplete collections to the field engineer with specific questions.Maintain Vetro records so as-designed and as-built data stay current and match what was built.Maintain GIS layers, symbology, drawing templates, and Field Maps forms used by the design and field teams.Keep design files, exports, and project folders organized and available to the rest of the department.Quality Control and ReportingReview designs against Lyte Fiber standards before release to permitting or construction.Track assigned designs and report weekly on status, volume, and completeness.Flag design conflicts, missing field data, and record errors that put schedules at risk.Provide input on design standards and GIS workflowsAdditional ResponsibilitiesAttend design, construction, and project meetings as required.Support field engineers and project managers with maps, exports, and data requests.Other Duties:Please note this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities required of the employee for this job.
