Delta Oaks Group in the United States is seeking a Fiber Designer to support underground fiber and OSP projects, including FTTH, long-haul, conduit and duct bank work.
The role uses ArcGIS as the primary GIS platform, AutoCAD for deliverables, and requires experience with OSP fiber design, field data interpretation, and coordination with internal teams. Travel for site walks is expected. This is a remote position.
Delta Oaks Group is seeking an individual to support the production of fiber and Outside Plant (OSP) engineering projects. The Fiber Designer will primarily support underground fiber infrastructure projects, including long-haul, middle-mile, conduit and duct bank infrastructure, and Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) projects as the DOG Fiber Program continues to expand. Project assignments may also include data center campus and inter-building fiber connectivity, including diverse routes and high-fiber-count cable systems. The Fiber Designer is responsible for using established GIS tools and workflows to execute assigned design work but does not own GIS architecture, enterprise data standards, or GIS automation development.
The Fiber Designer is expected to independently execute standard fiber design assignments with limited supervision. This position will utilize Geographic Information System (GIS) tools as a primary design and production environment, while utilizing CAD and other technical tools where appropriate to develop construction-ready deliverables.
The selected individual should have a strong understanding of OSP fiber design, the ability to interpret field and GIS information, and the ability to identify design, constructability, or data issues before they affect project delivery. The Fiber Designer will work closely with Senior Designers, GIS resources, Engineering leadership, PMO, and other internal teams while remaining focused primarily on technical production.
The Fiber Designer will also participate in field activities, including site walks, route surveys, and collection and verification of field information. Travel, including out-of-town travel, should be expected as part of the position.
The Fiber Designer supports the production of assigned fiber engineering projects from initial design development through construction-ready deliverables. The position is responsible for producing accurate, complete, and constructible designs while following established DOG standards, processes, and project requirements. Work priorities, technical escalation, and approval of deliverables will follow the Fiber Program Functional Division of Responsibilities (DOR) and the assigned Engineering leadership structure.
DOG's Fiber Program utilizes a GIS-first production philosophy. The Fiber Designer is expected to use established GIS data, workflows, tools, and outputs when applicable to support efficient and repeatable design production. The position will work with the GIS function to identify data issues and provide technical feedback regarding design requirements and GIS outputs.
Anticipated tasks include but are not limited to:
The Fiber Designer is expected to understand how GIS data, field conditions, design decisions, construction requirements, and final deliverables relate to one another. The position should be capable of resolving routine design issues independently while recognizing when a condition requires Senior Designer or Engineering leadership involvement.
The Fiber Designer does not have primary responsibility for client communication, jurisdictional coordination, permitting submission, commercial negotiations, vendor management, or project management.
Due to the nature and limited timelines of most projects, the candidate should be willing and capable of exhibiting the work ethic and social ability to succeed in a fast-paced environment where communication with co-workers and internal project teams is paramount.
The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated worker capable of operating in a team-oriented environment intended to complete projects effectively and efficiently. They should have strong attention to detail and take pride in producing accurate and constructible fiber designs.
This person should be a self-starter who can take ownership of assigned work with limited supervision, communicate issues proactively, and maintain productivity while working across multiple projects or assignments.
The candidate should demonstrate a willingness to learn and adapt to evolving GIS, OSP design, and fiber construction technologies and processes. They should be comfortable working in both field and office environments and understand the importance of connecting field conditions to accurate design deliverables.
Delta Oaks Group is founded on the principle of delivering unparalleled client service and providing its employees an exceptional work environment. We strongly believe that these two principles are not separable and are only accomplished through hard work, honesty, and treating others with respect. We are seeking individuals that share those same values.
Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Geographic Information Systems, Geospatial Technology, Telecommunications, or a related technical field from an accredited institution, or equivalent relevant experience.
A minimum of two (2) years of directly related experience in fiber OSP design, telecommunications design, utility design, GIS-based infrastructure design, or a related technical field is preferred.
Experience should demonstrate increasing responsibility in fiber design production, GIS utilization, field data collection, construction documentation, and technical problem solving. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to independently execute standard design assignments while appropriately identifying and escalating complex or non-standard design issues.
Travel, including out-of-town travel, will be required for this position. Travel may include site walks, route surveys, field data collection, and verification of existing conditions.
