Job summary

Shannon & Wilson, Inc. in Seattle, WA, is seeking a Geotechnical Instrumentation Engineer to manage multiple projects, mentor staff, and deliver instrumentation design, installation, and data evaluation for clients.

The role requires 7–14 years of instrumentation experience and a degree in Civil/Geotechnical/Geological Engineering, with the ability to obtain a PE license within 12 months. Travel and strong communication are essential.

Qualifications

  • BS, MS or PhD in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or Geological Engineering.
  • 7-14 years of progressive experience with geotechnical instrumentation.
  • Ability to obtain a Professional Engineering (PE) License in the state office is located within 12 months of being hired.
  • Mentoring and supervisory experience.
  • Excellent writing, organizational, and communication skills.
  • The ability to travel to support the needs of other Shannon & Wilson offices.
  • A valid driver license and insurable driving record.

  • Support business development and marketing activities, including proposals and presentations.

Responsibilities:
  • Manage effort on multiple projects at the same time.
  • Be able to work independently, as well as part of a team.

  • Manage and supply data collected from geotechnical instrumentation projects in meaningful formats.

  • Be willing to travel (up to several weeks at a time) to assist, oversee, or perform installation of geotechnical instrument monitoring systems.
  • Prepare and write technical instrumentation engineering reports. Review technical reports and other documents; construction observation reports; and instrumentation engineering calculations prepared by lower-level engineers.
  • Interact and communicate with clients, vendors, and staff at all levels.
  • Lead, mentor, oversee, and/or supervise engineers and other employees.
  • Aid other S&W offices with design, installation, and monitoring of geotechnical instrumentation projects.
  • Request assistance from a variety of junior engineers or geologists on various field projects to help them gain experience and understanding of the types of monitoring projects that Shannon & Wilson executes.
  • Train junior colleagues to have similar skill sets, to provide for back up and assistance.
  • Support business development and marketing activities, including preparation of cost proposals and presentations to existing and prospective clients.
  • Attend professional meetings and local conferences/trade shows to network with potential new clients
  • Market instrumentation services internally to all S&W offices.
  • Follow Shannon & Wilson’s Quality Assurance policy.
  • Follow and promote Shannon and Wilson’s Health and Safety and Loss Prevention policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
Requirements
  • BS, MS or PhD Degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or Geological Engineering.

Level Placement

Typically, depending on an applicant’s education, experience, other qualifications they possess, if they are a fit for the company and local office culture, and the current business needs, a Mid-Level Geotechnical Instrumentation Engineer typically would be placed at a Shannon & Wilson Senior Professional I, II, or III level.

Compensation:

Senior Professional I: $110,000 - $125,000

Senior Professional II: $115,000 - $135,000

Senior Professional III: $130,000 - $145,000
