About Thompson Creek Mine

The Thompson Creek Mine is a primary, surface molybdenum mine and mill located approximately 48 kilometers southwest of the town of Challis in Idaho's Custer County.

In operations since 1983, the mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods with large electric-powered shovels that can each move up to 100,000 tons of waste rock and ore per day.

Thompson Creek Mine promotes a drug and alcohol-free workplace and has adopted a zero-tolerance policy with respect to alcohol or unauthorized drugs on site.

About The Opportunity

We are looking for a Geotechnical Engineer, Mine to join our Thompson Creek team. The Geotechnical Engineer, Mine reports to the Superintendent of Mine Engineering and is responsible for overseeing all geotechnical functions at the TCM site. The role focuses on pit slope design and monitoring, structural and rock mass strength assessments, water and ground control, and QA/QC programs. It is a critical part of ensuring geotechnical support for safe, efficient mining operations while also contributing to leadership development and fostering a balance between operational performance and professional growth.

Conduct and communicate regular inspections of pit walls, stockpiles, roads, and other critical infrastructure, providing actionable recommendations.
  • Cross-Functional Coordination: Collaborate with mine design, planning, survey teams, and corporate engineering to ensure geotechnical criteria are integrated into mine plans and operational activities.
  • Project & Consultant Management: As needed, direct and review the work of external consultants and contractors, ensuring geotechnical studies, pit slope designs, and water control measures are conducted effectively and within budget.
  • Strategic Planning: Develop, maintain, and implement short and long‑term strategies to improve slope stability programs. Lead slope stability instrumentation and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Technical Reporting: Provide timely contributions and reports to daily, weekly, monthly, and annual plans. Prepare and present clear geotechnical updates, risks and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Geotechnical Modelling: Leverage industry-standard software (e.g., Deswik, RocScience, Flac3d, Leapfrog) for data analysis and modelling to make recommendations.
  • Safety & Compliance: Uphold and enforce site safety policies, procedures, and regulations, promoting a culture of safety and continuous improvement in all geotechnical activities.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other duties as assigned to support overall mine operations and corporate objectives.
