Job summary

VDOT in Virginia seeks a geotechnical engineer to perform investigations, tests and analyses for pavement and foundation projects. You will prepare technical reports, provide consultative support for construction and maintenance activities, and coordinate with internal staff and external stakeholders on transportation projects.

Role requires strong data interpretation, plan reading abilities, and experience with geotechnical principles.

Qualifications

• Ability to gather and analyze data and prepare technical reports.
• Ability to perform various investigations, analyze problems, draw logical conclusions and make recommendations to resolve issues.
• Ability to read and understand highway construction plans.
• Knowledge of civil engineering concepts, construction sequence, methods, materials and practices.
• Knowledge of drilling operations, pavement and soils testing, and other field data acquisition techniques.
• Knowledge of geology, geotechnical engineering, regional geologic formations, soils and rocks.
• Knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles and practices.
• Knowledge of new technologies and procedures and the application of statistical concepts for sampling and testing various materials.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include engineering software.

Responsibilities

• Perform or monitor geotechnical investigations and testing.
• Prepare analyses, reports and recommendations on geotechnical findings.
• Provide geotechnical engineering support and consultation for preliminary engineering, construction and maintenance activities.
• Communicate with internal staff, local government staff, consultants and FHWA regarding transportation projects and programs.
• Analyze and interpret engineering data and information; prepare reports and recommendations.
• Plan, schedule and coordinate engineering program activities to meet deliverables on time.
• May administer geotechnical on-call contracts and coordinate site investigations.
• Prepare pavement designs and foundation reports within project deadlines.
• Attend meetings to present recommendations and document outcomes.
• Support program areas with engineering data, policy updates and database maintenance.
