Job summary

Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting a Band 7 Clinical Scientist for the Newcastle Genetics Laboratory. The candidate will join a large team, support diagnostic genetics services and work towards HCPC registration if needed.

The role involves coordinating testing for a range of genetic conditions and maintaining high standards of reporting and service delivery within a UK-wide genetics network.

Qualifications

• First class or second class BSc degree in an appropriate subject with a strong genetics component.
• State registered clinical scientist in molecular genetics or cytogenetics with the Health and Care Professions Council (Master’s Degree equivalence).
• Previous experience as a pre‑registration scientist in a diagnostic genetics laboratory.
• Excellent laboratory bench skills.
• Communication and organisational skills.
• Desirable criteria include clinical scientist training qualification or MSc/PhD in a relevant subject.

Responsibilities

• Analysis, interpretation and reporting of genetic tests for a broad range of inherited disorders and acquired cancers.
• Service development in own area and support for the introduction of new guidelines for pathogenicity assessment.
• Supervision of technical, junior and trainee staff in the section and practical/theoretical training of staff.
• Provide specialist advice to clinicians on specific genetic tests.
