National Power is accepting applications to fill a Generator Service Technician opening in our Hertford, NC, market. Under the general direction of and reporting to the CISV Service Manager, the Generator Service Technician is responsible for maintenance and repair of generator sets and other electrical equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform various types and levels of maintenance and repair on generators and parallel systems ranging from 5-5000kw, troubleshooting and repairing Automatic Transfer Switches, performing preventative maintenance (oil and filters), troubleshooting AC and DC circuits, replacing components as necessary, performing warranty work per manufacturer’s guidelines, and performing start-up/commissioning on new generators and generator systems.
- Perform diesel or gaseous engine troubleshooting and repair, including but not limited to ignition components, injection systems, valve adjustments, etc.
- Perform load bank testing on generator(s) to ensure units are in the proper operating conditions and meet applicable code requirements.
- Assist other technicians with large multi-person jobs or troubleshooting complicated issues.
Education and Experience
- HS Diploma required; Associate degree in an electrical/mechanical related field preferred.
- Current Generac Power Systems certification preferred.
- US Air Force Electrical Power Production Specialist, US Navy Electrician’s Mate, or Generator and/or UPS field service technician preferred.
Skills and Other Qualifications
- Must have excellent communication skills and be able to give verbal/written reports of job status, repair recommendations, equipment/supplies needed.
- Must be able to account for time spent on jobs and travel.
- Must have an excellent driving record, a valid driver’s license, and must be willing to drive long distances, stay overnight in hotels (1-3 nights and occasionally up to a week), with the company covering hotel costs and providing a meal allowance.
- Must have good computer skills and be comfortable with Microsoft Office (Internet Explorer, Word, Excel) and Adobe PDF.
- The technician will work from home, ensuring proper vehicle maintenance, mandatory parts inventory, and security of Company property including cell phone, laptop, specialty tools, and other assigned items.
- Must manage difficult or emotional customer situations, respond promptly to customer needs, solicit feedback, meet commitments, and improve service.
- Must demonstrate problem‑solving capability during emergencies or limited‑resource situations.
- Must be willing to receive mandatory training courses in Milwaukee, Wisconsin or other mandated locations.
- Must demonstrate accuracy, self‑monitoring, willingness to improve quality, and compliance with safety mandates.
Work Conditions
- Must work in various weather conditions (heat, rain, snow, high humidity, etc.).
- Must work near moving mechanical parts.
Physical Demands
- Lifting and carrying objects up to 75lbs.
- Must use ladders, scaffolding, stairs, ramps, and related body motions.
- Must perform mandatory fieldhand manoeuvres.
- Must enter data into a computer or other machine.
- Maneuvering must use hands/arms, feet, or must be performed one side at a time.
- Must work in confined spaces using hands or feet.
- Must use pedals, buttons, levers, or cranks on machinery.
- Must have good vision for reading small print while using computers.
- Sitting for long periods of time may be required.
- Must access confined spaces on hands and knees or feet as mandatory.
