Job summary

The City of Cedar Park is seeking a Generator Technician to perform inspection, testing, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of emergency electrical generators serving City buildings and infrastructure.

You will ensure transfer switches and generators remain operational, support critical City services during emergencies, and maintain detailed records. Two years of related experience and a valid driver’s license are required; a high school diploma or equivalent is also required.

Description

The Generator Technician performs skilled inspection, testing, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of emergency electrical generator systems serving City buildings, facilities, and infrastructure. This position ensures generators and associated transfer switches remain operational and ready to support critical City services during normal operations and emergencies. The Generator Technician reports to the Utility Foreman and works collaboratively with the Pump and Motor Controls Department and other City personnel to maintain reliable utility and emergency power systems. Through proactive maintenance, accurate equipment records, and emergency response, this position supports the City's continuity of operations and public safety.

Essential Functions

• Inspects, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs emergency electrical generators and associated automatic transfer switches serving City buildings, facilities, and infrastructure.
• Performs scheduled generator exercise runs and operational tests to verify equipment readiness and proper operation.
• Performs preventive maintenance on assigned generators, including tune-ups, power-downs, oil sampling and changes, filter replacement, battery checks, and other manufacturer-recommended maintenance.
• Performs generator loading and load-bank testing as required and documents test results and equipment condition.
• Maintains accurate service histories and electronic records for assigned generators, including preventive maintenance, exercise dates and run times, testing, repairs, and other equipment information.
• Inspects generators and related equipment to identify deficiencies, potential failures, and required corrective maintenance.
• Coordinates with the Utility Foreman to maintain adequate inventories of generator repair parts, materials, and supplies.
• Performs inspection rounds of City lift stations and reports equipment deficiencies, maintenance needs, and unsafe conditions.
• Assists other sections of the Pump and Motor Controls Department with maintenance and operational activities as assigned.
• Responds to emergency conditions and participates in special task force activities during floods, storms, hurricanes, power outages, extreme cold weather, and other emergencies.
• Completes work orders, inspection reports, maintenance records, testing documentation, and other required records accurately and timely.
• Maintains clean, organized, and safe work areas and properly stores tools, equipment, and materials.
• Communicates equipment status, deficiencies, repair requirements, and safety concerns to the Utility Foreman and appropriate City personnel.

This position is safety sensitive and may be subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with applicable City policy and law.

Acceptable Experience, Training, Certifications and Licenses

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Work Experience: Two (2) years of experience inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, testing, or repairing emergency electrical generators or related electrical/mechanical equipment.

Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Certifications & Licensure: Valid state-issued driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Emergency electrical generator systems, including diesel-powered and standby generator systems.
• Automatic transfer switches, generator controls, and related electrical systems.
• Basic electrical and mechanical principles applicable to generator operation and maintenance.
• Preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, and repair practices for generator systems.
• Electrical safety practices, lockout/tagout procedures, and safe work practices around energized equipment.
• Safe operation of hand tools, power tools, electrical testing equipment, and related maintenance equipment.
• Basic first aid and emergency response procedures.
• Computer operations, electronic recordkeeping, data entry, word processing, spreadsheets, and work-order systems.

Skill And Ability To

• Diagnose electrical, mechanical, fuel, cooling, starting, charging, and control-system problems.
• Read and interpret equipment manuals, wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical instructions.
• Use hand tools, power tools, electrical testing equipment, and other equipment safely and effectively.
