Job Description

Title: General Technician - Press

Reports to: Production Manager

Summary: Performs process and support to the Gravure Press Operation in three specific areas as required but not limited to Press Room, Roll Stand Tasks and/or Material Handling.

Job Responsibilities
  • Receive product from Press, stack and place on pallets.
  • Print pallet labels with Pecas; find all information needed on job docket and set up sheet.
  • Ensure correct loading of product onto pallets for material handling; robot set‑up & troubleshooting if applicable.
  • Ensure quality of jobs completed by reviewing for quality and accuracy; ensure jobs are complete and error free; inform operators of problems.
  • Ensure finished product appears to be of highest quality, accurately printed and completed and free of errors.
  • Pull product samples according to company procedures and send to Quality Auditors as required.
  • Notify operator immediately of any problems and/or errors.
  • Webbing the press; assist operators when the press is down; clean press area by mopping walls, tables, cans, tanks, floors behind press and units.
  • Fill solvent cans, solvent mules and auto‑viscosity cans; fill varnish tank as needed.
  • Help set‑up cylinders, carriages for next job; help roll‑stand operator make blades, hang or cut down rolls; help sort and notify operator.
  • Ensure correct set‑up and breakdown of doctor blades using established instructions and procedures; properly remove/dispose of used doctor blades using safety procedures.
  • Clean backup blade; transport blade holders to the Pre‑Make Department for cleaning; set up new doctor blades according to policies and procedures ensuring measurements are correct and blade is in proper position.
  • Make‑Ready duties: purge all product from stacker, tables, color booth, press consoles and off‑line sorting machine; assist in changing impression rollers or change over stacker; assist in putting tools in press, changing tab breaker section, tearing down or putting pump together, separating different sections of the press; change cylinders, pump out inks and fill solvent containers; remove and/or install print unit cassettes.
  • Follow all company policies and procedures for EHS, personal protection, and hazard materials/waste handling according to established guidelines.
  • Use company provided safety lifting equipment such as hoist, jacks, vacuum manipulators, etc.
  • Examine work areas regularly to maintain a safe and neat condition, including proper grounding, cleaning ink and solvent containers, and storing/arranging equipment.
  • Roll stand operator tasks (if applicable): prepare and mount rolls, operate splicing unit, record roll information for Pecas and NCM’s, set up cylinders for subsequent jobs, split cores with core cutter, band board waste and roll wrappers for recycling, maintain varnish viscosity with Zahn cup and stopwatch, change out varnish drums, disconnect and reconnect ink tanks and auto‑viscosity, clean varnish or other cylinders as needed, assist operators when press is down.
  • Forklift operations (if applicable): maintain forklift equipment, loading and unloading pallets, waste, record keeping, checking schedule board for upcoming jobs, ensuring sufficient materials at press, rotating shifts as required, managing battery charging and replacement, completing daily inspection forms, reporting accidents, injuries and near‑misses.
Requirements
  • High School diploma (or GED), one to three years related production experience and/or training; must have very good mechanical and physical ability.
  • Lift truck operators must have and maintain safety training for operation of all company equipment.
Physical Demands

Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds. The position may require prolonged periods of standing, stooping, bending and/or reaching, balancing, climbing, kneeling, crouching, hearing and speaking. Must be able to hold, touch, feel and manipulate with hands product and equipment in a safe manner; manual dexterity is required. Use of close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to rotate shifts as required. Must be available to work in excess of 8 hours per day and/or 40 hours per week when necessary to meet customer product needs. Must be able to work in repetitive functions as well as other duties as required.
