Reports To: Director of Waterpark Operations
Position Overview
Breakwater Beach Waterpark is seeking an experienced, hands-on General Manager to lead and oversee the daily operations of our established Jersey Shore waterpark.
We are looking for a proven leader with a strong background in waterpark, amusement park, or comparable high-volume attraction operations. The successful candidate will take ownership of the overall operation, provide leadership to our management and supervisory teams, maintain high standards of safety and guest service, and ensure the park operates efficiently and professionally.
This position requires an individual who is comfortable making decisions, solving problems, managing multiple departments, and holding employees accountable while creating a positive and productive work environment.
Our Aquatics Department operates under StarGuard ELITE (SGE) standards and has earned a 4-Star audit designation. We are committed to maintaining that level of performance while continually working toward 5-Star excellence.
This is a hands-on leadership position requiring a visible management presence throughout the park, particularly during our busy operating season.
Key Responsibilities
Overall Park Operations
- Provide leadership and oversight of all daily waterpark operations, including Aquatics, Front Operations, guest services, and facility operations to include maintenance.
- Ensure departments operate safely, efficiently, and consistently with established policies and procedures.
- Oversee operational readiness, daily staffing, opening and closing procedures, and coordination between departments.
- Maintain a visible management presence, identifying concerns and addressing issues proactively.
- Serve as the primary on-site decision-maker for daily operational matters.
- Work closely with the Director of Waterpark Operations on operational planning, priorities, and improvements.
Aquatic Safety & Risk Management
- Provide oversight of aquatic safety operations and departmental leadership.
- Ensure compliance with StarGuard ELITE standards, applicable regulations, manufacturer requirements, and established operating procedures.
- Monitor lifeguard performance, training, staffing, rotations, and emergency preparedness.
- Oversee incident management, required documentation, and corrective actions.
- Maintain operational readiness for internal evaluations and external safety audits.
- Promote a culture in which safety standards are maintained every day, not simply when an audit is approaching.
Leadership & Staff Development
- Lead, coach, and develop the Assistant General Managers, department managers, supervisors, and seasonal employees.
- Establish clear expectations for performance, accountability, professionalism, and teamwork.
- Oversee recruiting, hiring, onboarding, employee training, and performance management.
- Develop strong supervisors capable of independently managing their responsibilities.
- Address employee concerns, performance issues, and operational challenges promptly and professionally.
- Build a positive work environment while maintaining high standards and consistent expectations.
Guest Experience & Service
- Ensure a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable experience for all guests.
- Oversee guest service standards and resolution of escalated complaints or concerns.
- Maintain high expectations for park cleanliness, appearance, and organization.
- Identify opportunities to improve guest satisfaction and operational efficiency.
- Promote cooperation between departments to deliver a consistent guest experience.
- Monitor and manage departmental budgets, labor expenses, sales performance, and cost of goods sold (COGS).
- Oversee staffing plans and scheduling to maintain appropriate coverage while controlling unnecessary labor expenses.
- Work with department managers to identify opportunities to improve revenue, productivity, and operational efficiency.
- Review financial and operational performance against established goals.
- Ensure accurate reporting, documentation, recordkeeping, and management communication.
- Support financial objectives without compromising safety, required staffing, training, regulatory compliance, or guest service standards.
Facility & Operational Readiness
- Coordinate with maintenance and facility personnel to ensure attractions, equipment, and guest areas are maintained appropriately.
- Oversee preseason preparations, operating-season readiness, and postseason evaluations.
- Ensure required inspections, operational checklists, and corrective actions are completed.
- Coordinate responses to severe weather, equipment concerns, water quality issues, and other operational interruptions.
- Identify facility needs and communicate recommendations to senior leadership.
Required Qualifications
- Proven management experience in a waterpark, amusement park, aquatic facility, or comparable high-volume recreational operation.
- Demonstrated ability to lead multiple departments, management personnel, supervisors, and large seasonal workforces.
- Strong understanding of aquatic safety, operational risk management, and emergency preparedness.
- Experience with budgeting, labor management, scheduling, and operational performance.
- Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to make sound decisions independently and remain effective under pressure.
- Experience recruiting, training, coaching, and holding employees accountable.
- Ability to maintain consistent operational standards while managing competing priorities.
- Availability to work extended hours, weekends, and holidays during the operating season.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a General Manager, Operations Manager, Aquatics Director, or comparable senior management position is a plus, but long-term aquatics manager experience should also apply.
- Experience in the waterpark or amusement industry.
- Familiarity with StarGuard ELITE or another recognized aquatic safety program.
- Experience with external safety audits and regulatory compliance.
- Experience managing sales, payroll, COGS, and financial performance objectives.
- Relevant aquatic safety, instructor, or management certifications.
The Leader We're Looking For
We are looking for someone who takes ownership of the operation and understands that successful management requires more than simply keeping the park running.
The ideal candidate:
- Leads by example: Sets the standard for professionalism, accountability, and work ethic.
- Takes ownership: Recognizes what needs to be done and follows through without constant direction.
- Develops people: Builds strong managers and supervisors who can lead their teams effectively.
- Maintains standards: Understands that safety and operational excellence are everyday responsibilities.
- Communicates effectively: Handles challenging conversations, employee concerns, and operational issues professionally.
- Understands the business: Balances financial performance, employee development, operational efficiency, and guest satisfaction.
- Works as part of a team: Recognizes that successful park operations require cooperation across all departments.
- Looks for improvement: Identifies opportunities, implements solutions, and takes responsibility for results.
This position requires someone who can confidently manage the operation while maintaining a positive relationship with senior leadership and the entire park team.
Schedule: Approximately 40 hours per week during the off-season and up to 65 hours per week during the operating season, including weekends and holidays as required.
Financial performance objectives must be achieved while maintaining all required safety, staffing, training, regulatory, and operational standards. Cost reductions that compromise these responsibilities are not acceptable methods of achieving bonus objectives.
