Job description

General Manager Opportunity

Full-Time | $90,000–$105,000+ base annually plus benefits and bonus opportunities

A globally inspired kitchen. A high-energy dining room. A leadership role with endless opportunities to make an impact. The Nautilus Pier 4, a critically acclaimed, independently owned restaurant on the water in Boston's Seaport, is looking for an experienced hospitality professional to join our team and lead our FOH team.

The ideal candidate is an established General Manager looking for a new opportunity or a larger dining room, or an ambitious Assistant General Manager ready to take the next step. Someone who genuinely loves hospitality and leading a team. Someone who is just as comfortable running a bustling dining room as they are developing talented employees, digging into the numbers, and finding smarter ways to get things done. Someone who thrives on the energy of a busy restaurant, isn't afraid to roll up their sleeves, lead by example, or work a late night. Somebody who would be excited to make their mark on one of Boston's best restaurants.

Above all, we're looking for a leader. Someone with presence, energy, accountability, emotional intelligence, situational awareness, and exceptional communication skills. Someone who knows how to motivate, educate, and get the best out of a team while genuinely taking care of the people who make it work, and who understands that great leadership means adapting their management style to the person and the situation, not the other way around. Someone who knows how to balance positive reinforcement and hands-on coaching with clear expectations, honest feedback, and a willingness to have difficult conversations when necessary.

We're looking for a detail-oriented, resourceful self-starter who takes ownership of challenges and knows how to figure things out. Someone who is comfortable navigating unfamiliar situations, finding answers independently, and making sound decisions without needing constant direction. Just as importantly, someone who understands the importance of communication - keeping the right people informed, knowing when to ask for input, and following through until the job is done. Someone who can keep the wheels turning even when the dining room is packed and the night is in full swing.

And of course - we want somebody who genuinely loves hospitality and knows how to throw a really good party. Someone who knows what a dining room needs from the lights to the music, and who understands that great service starts with a great team, takes pride in the details, and can balance high standards with a good sense of humor. We work hard, move fast, take our food and drinks seriously, and firmly believe that having fun should be part of the job.

The General Manager Role

This is a hands-on leadership position with significant responsibility for front-of-house operations, team development, guest experience, and overall restaurant performance. Working closely with operations leadership and ownership, you'll help lead the team, maintain high standards, and keep pushing us to be better. Ultimately, we're looking for someone we can count on - not just to run a great service, but to take ownership of the restaurant, anticipate challenges, follow through on commitments, and help us continually improve what we've built.

What You'll Be Doing:
  • Leading daily restaurant operations from the floor, keeping service running smoothly and making sure our guests have a great time.
  • Managing, mentoring, and developing our FOH management team, setting clear expectations and ensuring accountability and follow-through.
  • Overseeing FOH scheduling, staffing levels, reservations, and service organization to keep operations efficient and well organized.
  • Leading hiring, training, and employee development while building a strong, supportive team culture.
  • Maintaining and improving service standards, training programs, and operating procedures through both structured training and real-time coaching.
  • Providing constructive feedback, recognizing great performance, and addressing performance issues directly, fairly, and consistently.
  • Working closely with our culinary and beverage teams to ensure great communication, menu knowledge, and seamless service.
  • Participating in financial reporting, inventory analysis, labor management, budgeting, and operational planning.
  • Overseeing facility standards, repairs and maintenance coordination, and the general organization of the restaurant including seasonal operating changes.
  • Supporting special events, seasonal programming, and the little details that make Nautilus, well, Nautilus.
  • Spotting opportunities for improvement, solving problems, and taking initiative without waiting to be asked.
What You’ll Bring:
  • 5+ years of restaurant management experience, including senior leadership responsibilities, ideally in a high-volume, upscale full-service restaurant.
  • A confident, energetic floor presence and a genuine love for hospitality.
  • Exceptional communication skills and the confidence to coach, inspire, and hold a team accountable. This is critical.
  • Experience with high touch clientele.
  • Strong leadership instincts, emotional intelligence, and the ability to adapt your approach to different people and situations.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to juggle multiple priorities without losing sight of the big picture.
  • A proactive, resourceful, solutions-oriented mindset and a strong sense of ownership over your work.
  • The confidence and independence to tackle unfamiliar challenges, find answers, and make decisions, coupled with the judgment to know when to seek input or elevate an issue.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with ownership, senior leadership, and fellow managers, and to communicate proactively and effectively throughout a task or project.
  • A solid understanding of restaurant financials, labor management, scheduling, and operational performance.
  • Strong computer skills and comfort with spreadsheets, reporting, and restaurant technology. Experience with Toast, OpenTable, and Adobe InDesign is a plus.
  • Excellent service knowledge, a strong food and beverage foundation, and a curiosity to keep learning.
  • The ability to stay cool under pressure, adapt on the fly, and bring positive energy to a busy restaurant.
  • A willingness to take initiative, follow through on commitments, and hold yourself to the same standards you expect of your team.
  • Openness to feedback, a commitment to continuous improvement, and the maturity to turn constructive criticism into meaningful action.
  • The desire to take what we've already built and make it better every day.
What We Offer:
  • Competitive annual base salary of $85,000–$100,000+, depending on experience
  • Performance-based bonus opportunities
  • Health insurance benefits
  • Dental and vision benefits
  • Paid vacation and time off
  • Dining discounts across Nautilus Restaurant Group locations
  • Professional development and opportunities for continued growth
  • The chance to have a meaningful impact within an independently owned, chef-driven restaurant group

As Nautilus Restaurant Group continues to grow, we're looking for leaders who want to grow with us. For the right person, this role offers the opportunity to help shape the future of our restaurants and take on greater responsibility over time.

Who You’ll Be Leading and Working With:

The management teams and department leads consist of a junior manager, a reservations manager, an events manager, a wine director, a bar manager, as well as lead servers and bartenders, in addition to a full FOH team. You will report to our Asst. Director of Operations, our Executive Chef, and our hands on ownership team.

Schedule & Expectations

This is a full-time, year-round position requiring flexibility for nights, weekends, and holidays based on the needs of the restaurant. Closing the restaurant several nights per week is an essential part of the role, as is the flexibility to adjust start times and schedules to meet the demands of the business.

We believe great restaurant leaders lead from the floor, and we're looking for someone who embraces the energy, challenges, and rewards that come with being present when the restaurant is at its busiest.

Interested?

If you're a hardworking, motivated hospitality professional who loves great food, great drinks, great people, and the organized chaos of a busy restaurant, we'd love to meet you.
