Job summary

West Texas Detention Center in Sierra Blanca, TX seeks an on-site Maintenance Technician to perform general repairs, carpentry, and routine building maintenance. You will troubleshoot, plan repairs using blueprints, and keep facilities clean and safe for inmates and staff.

Preferred candidates have a high school diploma and basic HVAC/repair experience, with willingness to work after hours or on short notice. Valid driver's license required and prior correctional exposure is a plus.

Qualifications

  • Ability to follow instructions from supervisors and maintain safety.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects areas and equipment to identify needed repairs.
  • Troubleshoots issues to determine repairs.
  • Plans repair work using blueprints or manuals as needed.
  • Performs general repairs (drywall, painting, doors, fixtures).
  • Performs routine maintenance on building systems.
  • Cleans and assists with facility upkeep.
  • Provides prompt assistance to inmates during injuries or emergencies.
  • Orders supplies and materials for repairs and maintenance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Inspects and identifies areas, equipment, or machines in need of repair.

Troubleshoots issues to determine necessary repairs.

Plans repair work using the building's blueprints or equipment manual as needed.

Performs general repairs that do not require a specialized technician. Examples may include repairing drywall, painting, and repairing doors and other building fixtures.

Performs routine maintenance on building systems.

Cleans and assists with upkeep of the facilities.

Ensures prompt and appropriate assistance to inmates in the event of injury, illness, and emotional trauma.

Orders supplies and materials needed for repairs and maintenance.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge Skills/Abilities:

Ability to follow instructions from supervisors or senior maintenance workers.

Knowledge of general carpentry and repair.

Ability to use hand tools and power tools.

Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Ability to work after hours, over weekends and on public holidays with short or no notice.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience in correctional setting is highly desirable.

On-the-job training offered.

Valid driver’s license

Heating/Air Conditioning experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods of standing and walking.

Must be physically able to climb ladders, bend, or crawl into awkward spaces.

Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.

Frequent grasping, reaching, pushing, pulling, bending, and twisting.
