Job summary

Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Division of Occupational Licensure, seeks a General Counsel and Deputy Commissioner to lead the agency's legal, enforcement, and regulatory functions.

The role advises the Commissioner, directs legal strategy, drafts legislation, coordinates with the Attorney General, and ensures compliance with statutes. Minimum seven years as a lawyer with managerial experience and MA bar admission required.

Qualifications

• Seven years of professional experience in business/public administration with at least three years in a managerial capacity.
• Licensed to practice law in Massachusetts (admitted to the bar).
• Experience with state administrative procedures and regulated industries.
• Familiarity with Construction and Trade law.
• Public sector experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead legal operations across the Division of Occupational Licensure, including enforcement, boards and regulations, and background checks.
• Advise the Commissioner and senior management on legal, regulatory, and policy matters.
• Coordinate legal and policy positions with the Office of Consumer Affairs, other state agencies, and the Attorney General’s Office.
• Draft proposed legislation and regulations and oversee litigation strategy.
