Job summary

The United States Senate Sergeant at Arms is seeking a night-shift environmental services attendant to perform cleaning, room setup, and related support tasks in the Senate wing of the U.S. Capitol building.

Duties include stripping and waxing floors, carpet care, trash removal, moving furniture, and helping with events as directed by a Team Leader. The role is onsite, overnight (11:00 pm–7:30 am), requires a high school diploma and 1–3 years of related experience, and entails operating cleaning

  • Ability to operate a variety of moving and cleaning equipment; includes learning to operate an electric pallet jack.

  • Moves furniture, materials, and supplies using appropriate equipment.
  • Cleans and restocks public restrooms and cleans offices including kitchenettes, fireplaces, and private restrooms.
  • Removes trash from public and private areas and transports to collection site.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Description
JOB OVERVIEW

The Target Salary for this position is: $66,000

This position performs environmental services support, including a variety of cleaning tasks such as stripping and waxing floors, cleaning carpets, setting fireplaces, moving furniture, conducting trash removal, and cleaning and maintaining equipment, in addition to occasionally setting up rooms for events in the Senate wing of the U.S. Capitol building. These tasks are accomplished both individually and as a team, depending on the general direction of a Team Leader. This is highly sensitive work requiring superior etiquette and professionalism. The role requires interaction with Senate offices, as well as several supporting departments. Work is performed overnight, typically from 11:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.

Key Accountabilities/Essential Job Duties

Sets up rooms for meetings, conferences, and banquets on a regular basis. Moves furniture, materials, and supplies using appropriate equipment. Cleans and restocks public restrooms. Cleans offices, including kitchenettes, fireplaces, and private restrooms. Removes trash from public and private areas of the Senate side of the Capitol and transports trash to the collection site. Other duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Required Education

High school diploma (or GED).

Required Work Experience
  • One to three years of experience setting up events, moving furniture, and/or office cleaning, or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills.
Required Special Skills/ Knowledge
  • Ability to operate a variety of moving and cleaning equipment; including the ability to learn to operate an electric pallet jack.
  • As part of our hiring process, we may conduct a skills assessment to better understand an applicant’s proficiency in key areas relevant to the role.
Working Conditions
  • Since this position requires onsite presence in support of the U.S. Senate when in session, this position requires the employee to be available and prepared to work during a lapse in appropriations, in inclement weather, on holidays, and during late-night, overnight, and weekend sessions. In the context of government furloughs, this position is considered excepted.
  • This position directly supports essential services of the U.S. Senate. As such, this position requires the employee to be available and prepared to work during a lapse in appropriations, in inclement weather, on holidays, weekends, and during late nights to ensure essential services to the Senate continue without interruption. In the context of government furloughs, this position is considered excepted.
  • Work requires frequent physical effort, including walking, bending, crawling, and standing for long durations.
  • Heavy lifting is required, including carrying items weighing more than 50 pounds.
  • Work exposes the employee to hazardous materials (cleaning chemicals) and biohazard materials (blood, pathogens) and OPIM (other potentially infectious material).
  • Work requires the employee to wear uniforms and protective equipment such as gloves or other protective gear, excluding respirators.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Be a U.S. citizen;
  • Be lawfully admitted for permanent residence and seeking citizenship as outlined in 8 U.S.C.
  • 1324b(a)(3)(B);
  • Be (i) admitted as a refugee under 8 U.S.C.
  • 1157 or granted asylum under 8 U.S.C.
  • 1158 and (ii) have filed a declaration of intention to become a lawful permanent resident and then a citizen when eligible; or
  • Owe allegiance to the U.S. (i.e., qualify as a non-citizen U.S. national under federal law).
