Job summary

John Keno and Company is seeking an experienced General Contracting Superintendent to lead field operations on commercial construction projects throughout the Chicago area.

This hands-on leader will drive safety, quality, communication, and schedule while maintaining strong trade-partner relationships and solving on-site challenges. You will have authoritative field leadership with the ability to influence project outcomes and deliver high-visibility results.

Qualifications

  • Five to ten years of commercial general construction experience.
  • Progressive experience leading field operations and coordinating multiple subcontractors.
  • Strong understanding of drawings, specs, sequencing, quality control, and jobsite documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day field operations and maintain a safe, organized, professional jobsite.
  • Help establish and enforce the project safety plan and OSHA requirements.
  • Supervise field personnel, subcontractors, temporary labor, and trade partners.
  • Coordinate subcontractors, inspections, equipment, manpower, and material deliveries.
  • Collaborate with the PM to develop and manage the CPM schedule.
  • Prepare three-week look-ahead schedules and recovery plans.
  • Lead meetings with owners, occupants, design professionals, subcontractors, and trades.
  • Monitor subcontractor progress, safety, and schedule compliance.
  • Implement the quality control plan and ensure drawings/submittals/ codes compliance.
  • Maintain daily reports, manpower records, and as-built drawings.
  • Identify conditions that may cause change orders or back charges.
  • Prepare RFIs and resolve field conflicts to protect schedule.
  • Represent JKC professionally as the primary field liaison.

John Keno and Company is seeking an experienced General Contracting Superintendent to lead field operations on commercial construction projects throughout the Chicago area.

This is an opportunity for a hands‑on leader who takes ownership, anticipates challenges, develops strong trade‑partner relationships, and knows how to keep safety, quality, communication, and schedule moving in the same direction. What You Will Do

  • Collaborate with the APM/Project Manager to develop and manage the CPM schedule.
  • Prepare and communicate three-week look-ahead schedules and recovery plans.
  • Lead and participate in meetings with owners, occupants, design professionals, subcontractors, and trades.
  • Monitor subcontractor progress, workmanship, safety, housekeeping, and schedule compliance.
  • Implement the quality control plan and confirm that work complies with drawings, specifications, approved submittals, and applicable codes.
  • Maintain accurate daily reports, manpower records, jobsite photos, inspection documentation, and as-built drawings.
  • Identify and document conditions that may result in change orders or back charges.
  • Prepare or initiate RFIs, resolve field conflicts, and communicate decisions early enough to protect the schedule.
  • Represent JKC professionally as the primary field liaison with owners and building occupants.
What You Bring
  • Five to ten years of commercial general construction experience.
  • Progressive experience leading field operations and coordinating multiple subcontractors and trades.
  • Strong understanding of construction drawings, specifications, sequencing, quality control, and jobsite documentation.
  • Experience with CPM schedules and three-week look-ahead planning.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA construction safety requirements; OSHA 30 certification is preferred.
  • Strong communication, organization, supervision, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Comfort using email, mobile devices, and construction technology for plans, reports, photos, and project communication.
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to report to assigned Chicago-area jobsites.
  • Availability for occasional project-related travel outside the Chicago area.

Target Salary: $120,000 - $175,000 We consider several job-related factors when determining an individual’s starting compensation within the posted salary range. These factors may include relevant skills and experience, education, required licensure or certifications, the scope and responsibilities of the position, business needs, and current market conditions.

The Superintendent reports to the Executive VP and works closely with owners, subcontractors, trades, and JKC’s project leadership team.
