Job summary

The Florida Public Service Commission (FPSC) is seeking an Engineering Specialist I to assist in evaluating gas distribution systems and equipment for compliance with safety standards. The role covers Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties with travel and irregular hours.

Ideal candidates will have four years in engineering or a relevant degree with experience; PHMSA training is a plus, and a state-owned vehicle is provided for field inspections.

Qualifications

• Four years of relevant work experience in the area of engineering.
• An associate degree and two years of relevant work experience OR a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in an area of engineering may be used as an alternative.
• Territory covers south and central Florida (Miami District) and candidates will need to reside in either Miami-Dade, Broward, or Palm Beach counties.

Responsibilities

• Assists with the analysis and evaluation of utilities’ gas distribution systems to ensure that adequate safety measures are taken to protect the public from hazards.
• Assists with the evaluation of gas distribution equipment and apparatus to ensure appropriate design, materials, and application.
• Determines if installations comply with state and federal rules.
• Must have the ability to complete PHMSA Natural Gas Training courses within three years; travel to Oklahoma for training.
• Extensive vehicle travel is required, at times overnight, to conduct gas safety field inspections.
• This position requires irregular work hours and on-call duties for emergencies.
