Job summary

International Arts & Artists (IA&A) seeks a part-time Gallery Assistant for Hillyer’s Contemporary Art Center in Washington, DC. You will greet visitors at the reception, answer questions about the current exhibition, and connect guests with IA&A and Hillyer.

Between visitors, you will support exhibitions, programs, outreach, and communications projects while assisting with installations, events, and AV setup. Weekend hours are core, with some weekdays/evenings possible.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or equivalent experience.
• 1–2 years of experience in a gallery, museum, or visitor-facing setting.
• Fluent in spoken and written English; additional languages are an asset.
• Strong interpersonal skills and a service mindset; balance visitors, members, and organization needs.
• Familiarity with exhibition installation and art handling.
• Experience creating content for professional social media accounts (Instagram, Facebook, etc.).
• Comfortable with spreadsheets and basic office software.
• Able to do hands-on installation and event work, such as setting up tables and chairs, painting, and ladders.
• Available to work weekends, plus some weekdays and evenings.
• Able to work independently at the desk and collaboratively with the team; take direction.
• Experience with education, programming, or community engagement is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Greet visitors warmly and professionally at the reception.
• Know the current exhibition well to answer questions about artists and works.
• Share information about IA&A, Hillyer, exhibitions, programs, and memberships.
• Collect visitor information and gather feedback on hearing about IA&A.
• Encourage memberships, donations, and e-newsletter signups; collect donations at events.
• Track attendance, visitor locations, programs, and revenue in spreadsheets.
• Keep the entrance and desk clean and welcoming; manage signage equipment.
• Support exhibitions, programs, and outreach projects through content creation and coordination.
• Install and uninstall exhibitions; assist with setup for events; help with AV tasks.
• Assist with tours, program introductions, and surveys; document programs with photos/video.
