Job summary

Stubblefield Institute in Shepherdstown, WV, seeks a Gallery Assistant to monitor the university art gallery, greet visitors, and respond to inquiries about current exhibitions and artists. You will help with general upkeep and ensure the space remains welcoming and safe for the public, students, and staff.

Additionally, you may assist with installation processes, opening night receptions, and deinstallation, collaborating with curators and directors to support a smooth exhibition experience

Qualifications

Job Summary/Basic Function

The Gallery Assistant supports the daily operations of the university art gallery, Phaze 2 and serves as a welcoming and knowledgeable representative of the university to visitors, students, faculty, artists, and members of the public. Working closely with the Gallery Director and other members of the Art Department, the Gallery Assistant helps maintain a professional, accessible, and engaging gallery environment.

Primary responsibilities include monitoring the gallery during open hours, welcoming and assisting visitors, answering questions about current exhibitions and participating artists, and maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the gallery and lobby areas. Gallery Assistants may also assist with opening receptions, artist visits, and other exhibition-related activities as needed.

The position provides students with practical experience working in a professional gallery environment and opportunities to develop skills in visitor engagement, exhibition preparation, art handling, gallery operations, and professional communication.

Minimum Qualifications

• Must be currently enrolled as a university student
• Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with visitors, faculty, staff, artists, and fellow students
• Ability to follow instructions, work independently when appropriate, and collaborate effectively with the Gallery Director and Art Department staff.

Preferred Qualifications

• Art majors are preferred; students from related disciplines with a demonstrated interest in the visual arts may also be considered.
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Professional, dependable, and attentive approach to assigned responsibilities
• Familiarity with basic exhibition terminology and a willingness to become familiar with the concepts, artists, and historical or contemporary context presented in each exhibition
