The University of Denver is seeking a Gallery Assistant for the Vicki Myhren Gallery and Davis Gallery in the Shwayder Art Building. You will welcome visitors, share information about current exhibitions, and help maintain a safe, clean gallery environment during public hours.

As a student employee, you will support events, receptions, and lectures, handle light clerical tasks, and coordinate with staff to ensure a welcoming and professional experience for all visitors.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled DU undergraduate or graduate student with a Work Award.
  • Dependable and punctual with the ability to work scheduled gallery shifts consistently.
  • Ability to work independently and follow established gallery procedures.
  • Ability to interact professionally and courteously with visitors, students, faculty, and staff.
  • Willingness to learn about current exhibitions, gallery operations, and appropriate care and monitoring of artworks.

Responsibilities

Position Summary

Gallery Assistants support the daily operation of the Vicki Myhren Gallery and Davis Gallery, located in the Shwayder Art Building within the School of Art & Art History. Gallery Assistants serve as welcoming and knowledgeable representatives of the galleries, helping to create a positive experience for visitors while ensuring that exhibition spaces remain clean, safe, and well maintained.

Essential Functions
  • Welcome visitors and provide general information about current exhibitions, programs, and the galleries.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Interest in art, art history, museums, galleries, or other cultural organizations.
  • Previous experience in customer service, hospitality, museums, galleries, events, or another public-facing environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to maintain an organized and professional environment.
  • Prior gallery or museum experience is welcome but not required.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills and the ability to interact professionally and welcomingly with a wide range of visitors, students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Ability to learn and communicate basic information about current exhibitions, artists, programs, and gallery policies.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise good judgment, and follow established gallery procedures.
  • Dependability, punctuality, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to recognize and appropriately respond to visitor concerns, artwork safety issues, or maintenance needs and communicate them to gallery staff.
  • Ability to maintain a professional, organized, and visitor-ready gallery environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with gallery staff and other student employees.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to perform routine clerical and administrative tasks.
  • Interest in art, museums, galleries, or public-facing cultural work preferred; prior gallery experience is not required.
  • Work is primarily performed in public-facing art gallery spaces within the Shwayder Art Building.
  • Gallery Assistants may work independently for portions of their shifts and interact regularly with visitors and members of the University community.
  • Work environment is generally quiet to moderate but may become busy and noisy during receptions, lectures, exhibition openings, and other public programs.
  • Some evening or weekend hours may be required for gallery events and programs.
  • Work requires attentiveness to the gallery environment and to the safety and care of exhibited artworks.
Physical Activities
  • Ability to remain seated or standing for extended periods while monitoring gallery spaces.
  • Ability to move throughout gallery and building spaces during a shift.
  • Ability to perform light cleaning, gallery upkeep, and event setup and cleanup.
  • Ability to use a computer and perform routine clerical tasks.
  • Ability to occasionally bend, reach, and move or transport materials and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
