Job summary

Vaughn Next Century Learning Center in San Fernando, CA is seeking a Special Education Assistant - Paraprofessional to support both general and special education staff and help students meet IEP goals.

You will prepare materials, track progress, implement supports, supervise students during activities, and assist in behavior plans. The role requires a HS diploma, college units, and prior classroom experience.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• 48 semester college units or 60 quarter units (or pass pre-employment test with 70%+).
• Preferably enrolled in an accredited college.
• 2 years of classroom assistant experience or related experience with school-aged students.

Responsibilities

• Co-plan and co-instruct with general and special education staff.
• Provide individualized and small group support to address academic, social, behavioral, and vocational goals.
• Implement IEP goals, adaptations, and services.
• Prepare lessons and materials to support IEP goals and objectives.
• Document progress towards goals and services provided.
• Participate in professional development.
• Accompany selected students in educational field trips as needed.
• Assist in school-wide positive behavior practices, classroom management, and behavior intervention plans.
• Supervise students in and out of classroom settings.
• Support RST with service delivery, progress monitoring, testing support, maintenance of student records, and RSP classroom environment.
• Participate in all school emergency and safety plans.
• Other duties as assigned.

STATUS: Hourly, up to 196 work days, Full-Time, 30+ hours per week

REPORTS TO: Site Director, RST, & Student Services Director

Organization Overview

Vaughn Next Century Learning Center ("Vaughn"), located in Pacoima, is a large urban public school within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Since the early 1970s, low student achievement had been a pattern. In 1993, tired of being helpless and hopeless, Vaughn became the first conversion charter school in the nation and was authorized by LAUSD. The charter was renewed most recently in 2018. Vaughn has over 25 years of experience as a successful independent charter school serving the district’s low-income students. This previously failing elementary public school is now a full-service, community-based, K-12th charter school that assures all students are college/career ready, digitally literate, and globally competent. Vaughn operates five contiguous campuses under one charter.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Supervise students in and out of classroom settings
• Support Resource Specialist Teacher (RST) with service delivery, progress monitoring, testing support, maintenance of student records, and RSP classroom environment
• Participate in all school emergency and safety plans
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED
• 48 semester college units/60 quarter college units OR pass a pre-employment test with 70% or better.
• Preferably, enrolled in an accredited college
• 2 years of classroom assistant experience or related experience working with school-aged students.

Compensation and Benefits

• $20.00 - $24.00/hr (Non-Bachelor's Degree), $26.00 - $30.00/hr (Bachelor's Degree), $31.00 - $36.00/hr (Teaching Credential/Master's Degree)

Additional Information

• Must pass a criminal background check (Live Scan) with the Department of Justice (DOJ)
• Must provide a Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux) clearance within 60 days of employment
