JOB TITLE: Behavior Intervention AssistantSTATUS: Full-Time, 195 Work Days per yearREPORTS TO: Behavior Lead TechnicianPROGRAM: School-Wide (K-12)Organization OverviewVaughn Next Century Learning Center (“Vaughn”), located in Pacoima, is a large urban public school within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Since the early 1970s, low student achievement had been a pattern. In 1993, tired of being helpless and hopeless, Vaughn became the first conversion charter school in the nation and was authorized by LAUSD. The charter was renewed most recently in 2018. Vaughn has over 25 years of experience as a successful independent charter school serving the district’s low-income students. This previously failing elementary public school is now a full-service, community-based, K-12th charter school that assures all students are college/career ready, digitally literate, and globally competent. Vaughn operates five contiguous campuses under one charter.Position OverviewThe Behavior Intervention Assistant provides direct behavioral support to students throughout the school day by implementing assigned behavior intervention plans and strategies. Daily responsibilities include supporting students in classroom and school settings, prompting and reinforcing appropriate behaviors, responding to behavioral challenges, using approved de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques, and assisting students in returning to learning activities. The position also involves collecting and documenting behavioral data, completing assigned assessments, tracking services provided, communicating student progress and concerns to the behavior team, and collaborating with teachers and support staff to promote student safety, engagement, and success. The Behavior Intervention Assistant works under the direction of the Behavior Lead Technician and follows established intervention protocols, confidentiality requirements, and school procedures.Primary ResponsibilitiesProvide behavior management intervention services.Prevent and de-escalate harmful/disruptive behaviorsImplement crisis intervention strategiesImplement differential reinforcement and extinction proceduresConduct certain types of assessments (e.g. stimulus preference assessments) as assigned by Behavior Lead TechnicianAssist in collecting and recording behavioral data to track student progressReport student progress and make recommendations to the behavior teamProvide and track services in a timely and accurate mannerCollaborate with support and school staff to develop, implement, and modify behavior intervention plansAttend ongoing trainings as assignedMaintain confidentiality at all timesAdditional duties as assignedMinimum QualificationsPossess a high school diplomaPossess an Associate’s degree or higher or 48 college semester units or satisfactorily pass a local assessment of knowledge and skills testMust have a minimum of 1-year experience as a classroom paraprofessional, special education assistant, behavior intervention, or adult assistant.Desirable Skills/Qualifications:Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Sociology, or related field preferredExperience with working in a team atmosphereExcellent interpersonal and organizational skillsExcellent oral and written communication skillsTwo or more years of experience in providing behavioral intervention or behavior managementservices to mild to severe individualsInterest in the fields of psychology, mental health, behavior management, special education, sociology,or any closely related fieldAbility to perform physical activities that may involve strength, flexibility, and balanceCompensation and Benefits$22.00 - $26.00/hr.
