Job summary

Vaughn Next Century Learning Center in San Fernando, CA is seeking a part-time custodian to support daily cleaning and maintenance responsibilities at MIT (6th-8th) site.

The role requires ability to lift up to 15 lbs, good written and oral communication, and a team-oriented approach. You will report to the Site Plant Manager and join a mission-driven, LAUSD-chartered school.

Qualifications

• Must be able to stand or walk for prolonged periods.
• Basic knowledge of computer or cellphone use.

Responsibilities

• Participates in custodial work: cleaning rooms, bathrooms, halls, gym, library and equipment.
• Operates and maintains power cleaning equipment (scrubbers, vacuum cleaners).
• Inspects building to maintain custodial standards and safety.
• Coordinates maintenance needs with the Maintenance office.
• Maintains a healthy and safe school environment.

Organization Overview

Vaughn Next Century Learning Center (“Vaughn”), located in Pacoima, is a large urban public school within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Since the early 1970s, low student achievement had been a pattern. In 1993, tired of being helpless and hopeless, Vaughn became the first conversion charter school in the nation and was authorized by LAUSD. The charter was renewed most recently in 2018. Vaughn has over 25 years of experience as a successful independent charter school serving the district’s low-income students. This previously failing elementary public school is now a full-service, community-based, K-12th charter school that assures all students are college/career ready, digitally literate, and globally competent.Vaughn operates five contiguous campuses under one charter.

Position Overview

Custodial workers performa variety of duties relative to assisting in the school setting. This is a part-time position that reports to the Site Plant Manager.

Primary Responsibilities

• Participates in custodial work in cleaning rooms, toilets, halls, stairways, gym, library, walls, fixtures,and equipment (sweeping, polishing, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, and disinfecting)
• Operates, services, adjusts, and makes minor repairs to power equipment (scrubbing machines,vacuum cleaners, yard equipment.)
• Inspects building and equipment in order to maintain custodial standards and non-hazardousconditions.
• Determines the need for maintenance work and coordinates maintenance services with Maintenanceoffice
• Maintain a healthy & safe environment (classroom, bathrooms, grounds, hallways, etc.)
• Participates in removal of weeds and debris from paved and unplanted areas.
• Participates in watering lawns, shrubs, and trees.
• Participates in moving audio-visual and other equipment within the school or office.
• Work effectively with employees, students, and the public.
• Communicate effectively, orally, and in writing.
• Participate in all school emergency and safety plans.
• Support all children in all learning activities.

Qualifications / Physical Demands

• Be able to stand/walk around for prolonged periods of time.
• Lift up to 15 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications

• Basic knowledge of computer/cell phone use
• Communicate effectively orally and in writing (English)
• Team player with a demonstrated ability to initiate and maintain effective and cooperative professional relationships.

Desirable Skills/Qualifications

• Custodial experience in a school setting
• Custodial/grounds and buildings certificate
• Bilingual in English/Spanish

Compensation and Benefits

• $20.00 - $24.00/hr (FY 26-27)
• SickTimeAccrual

Additional Information

Upon receiving an offer of employment:

• Must pass a criminal background check (Live Scan) with the Department of Justice (DOJ)
• Must provide a Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux) clearance within 60 days of employment
• Will be assigned mandated state training to be completed prior to the first day of employment
