Pacific University is seeking a part-time FWS-Library Acquisitions and Cataloging Assistant at the Tran Library in Forest Grove. The role supports acquisitions, cataloging, and collection management through processing materials and database upkeep.

The position is open to current Pacific University students, with 6–10 hours per week, 9am–5pm, Monday–Thursday as agreed with the supervisor. Training and scope include workflow accuracy and confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Process books, CDs, DVDs, and other materials to prepare them to be shelved in the library and checked out by users.
  • Receive, process, and shelve print periodicals.
  • Move books and other library materials around in the department and on the shelves.
  • Assist with library database maintenance, ensuring high levels of accuracy in descriptions and statuses of resources.
  • Assist in special Collection Services projects as needed (reorganizing books, relabeling materials, sorting materials physically or electronically).
  • Use specialty library software, Google Sheets and Docs, and Microsoft Office products to fulfill these duties.
  • Work at a computer for extended periods, read, stoop, lift, and perform repetitive motion.
  • Perform complex workflows with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisor and other student employees.
  • Strictly maintain library patron confidentiality.

This position is only open to current Pacific University students.

Title of position: FWS-Library Acquisitions and Cataloging Assistant I

Department name and location: Collection Services Department, Tran Library, Forest Grove Campus

Purpose of position: To support library acquisitions, cataloging, and collection management functions of the library. This includes processing newly-acquired library materials, and helping library staff maintain physical and/or electronic materials at all stages of their lifecycle in the library collections.

Scheduling: This position works at the Tran Library, 6-10 hours per week, between Monday-Thursday, 9am-5pm, as agreed upon by student employee and supervisor.

Job duties and responsibilities:

  • Process books, CDs, DVDs, and other materials to prepare them to be shelved in the library and checked out by users

Length of employment: Typically, fall and spring terms, with option to return for the following year based on performance and position availability. Sometimes, additional work during winter (J-term) or summer may be available.

Supervisor name: Michelle Lenox

Wage rate: Library tier I: $16.80. In subsequent years of employment, based on performance and knowledge/duties, there may be an opportunity to advance to assistant II and III positions, with associated wage increases.

    • Music, especially classical, jazz, and/or folk music; music performance, music education, and/or music therapy
    • Fiction and/or nonfiction literature
    • Education and literacy for elementary-aged children
    • We are interested in hearing about any other academic background, hobbies, interests, and skills as well!
