JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
The assistant performs a variety of manual and office tasks to facilitate funeral services and related operations. Duties include:
- Funeral Services
- Prepare casket and deceased for visitation or funeral services: dressing casket, adjusting deceased clothing and jewelry.
- Transport casket through hallways and assist with lifting deceased.
- Prepare rooms for various services: setting up and cleaning chairs, tables, icons, guest books, flowers, keepsakes, mementos, casket, and urn.
- Greet visitors, provide programs, answer questions, and supply funeral services information.
- Serve as a pallbearer if required.
- Drive families to cemetery site.
- After services, remove, clean, and properly store company property; package, load, or deliver family mementos, keepsakes, and flowers.
- Office Assistance
- Courteously answer phones, screen callers, and take initial call information.
- Notify staff when appointments arrive and escort guests to appropriate rooms.
- Maintain reception area and refreshments: make coffee, dispose of trash, replenish supplies, and perform general cleaning.
- Review a variety of documents for accuracy, and enter data into proprietary systems.
- Receive deliveries, make copies, scan, fax, fold, and prepare memorial materials.
- Perform other mailroom tasks as needed.
- Driver and Vehicle Maintenance
- Transport, pick up, and deliver documents, family mementos, flowers, and similar articles safely to destinations such as family residences, care centers, or funeral homes.
- Wash, vacuum, and clean vehicles; ensure they are presentable.
- Fuel vehicles as necessary, following safety guidelines and expenditure processes.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Certification/License: Valid state-issued driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Experience: No prior work experience required; funeral industry experience preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Ability to follow instructions given over the phone or in person.
- Proficiency with a personal computer and typing.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to work with kindness and compassion for the deceased and their families.
- Maintain composure in challenging situations and confidentiality.
- Teamwork: work with colleagues to accomplish tasks.
- Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Physical strength: lift up to 50 pounds and push/pull up to 200 pounds.
WORK CONDITIONS
Work Environment: Indoors and outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions; professional dress required when in contact with families; driving company vehicles.
Work Postures: Frequent, continuous periods of standing up to 6 hours per day; climbing stairs to access buildings.
Physical Demands: Lifting up to 50 pounds; push/pull up to 200 pounds; manual dexterity for paperwork, calculator use, computer, and phone usage.
Work Hours: Beyond standard hours, including weekends, nights, and holidays.
Local Travel: Travel within surrounding community.
COMPENSATION
Salary: $18.00 per hour.
