Job summary

Redwood Materials is seeking a Functional Safety Engineer to lead ESS safety compliance and enable safe deployment of energy storage technologies.

You will develop hazard analyses, safety cases, and test strategies while coordinating with certification bodies and cross-functional teams to meet evolving safety requirements. A strong background in UL/IEC standards and embedded software is essential.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in electrical/computer/systems engineering or related field.
Hands-on embedded software in safety-critical or regulated environments.
Experience with microcontroller-based systems and low-level software/firmware.
Proficiency in C for real-time embedded systems.
Strong background in UL 1998, UL 991, and UL 5500.
Familiarity with IEC 61508, IEC/UL 60730, ISO 26262 or ISO 13849.
Experience with Energy Storage Systems or safety-critical systems.
Ability to apply functional safety methodologies (hazard analysis, safety cases, V&V planning).
Experience coordinating with third-party testing/certification bodies.

Responsibilities

Lead compliance activities for ESS functional safety with UL 1998/UL 991/UL 5500.
Develop FMEAs, hazard analyses, safety cases, and test strategies.
Coordinate with certification bodies to secure approvals.
Translate safety standards into actionable requirements for teams.
Support product development cycles with safety inputs and reviews.
Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and design teams on safety processes.
