Job summary

UPMC Shadyside is hiring a full-time Phlebotomist to join our Short Stay Unit. The role focuses on accurate phlebotomy and specimen collection for inpatients and outpatients, with duties including clerical tasks and LIS data entry. Work involves two shifts and every other weekend rotation, under Medical Technologist supervision.

The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent; phlebotomy certification is preferred, with 6 months experience preferred. Equal opportunity employer.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Phlebotomy certification from an accredited program preferred.
• Minimum 6 months experience performing phlebotomy preferred.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and LIS experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Accurately perform phlebotomy and specimen collection for inpatients and outpatients.
• Demonstrate courtesy and professionalism with all laboratory customers.
• Properly identify patients and collect venipuncture, heelstick, and fingerstick samples.
• Enter demographic information and orders into LIS and information systems.
• Transports and handles specimens following safety procedures.
• Trainee onboarding and orientation of new staff as applicable.
• Communicate unusual or problematic incidents to supervisors/pathologists.
• Adhere to hospital policies, safety, and quality control guidelines.
