Job summary

State of South Dakota is inviting applications for a Highway Maintenance Worker in Pierre. The role involves ensuring highways remain safe and drivable, working in crews, and performing a range of maintenance tasks including sign installation, pavement markings, and winter operations.

Work schedules vary by season with 10-hour days May–Sept and eight-hour days Oct–Apr. A Class A CDL with tanker endorsement is required within 120 days, plus ability to operate heavy equipment and lift heavy loads.

Qualifications

• Experience in the operation of heavy equipment/farming or ranching equipment and/or experience in heavy construction is preferred.
• Basic math to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.
• Basic computer operation (desirable but not required).

Responsibilities

• Perform roadway maintenance activities and roadside work.
• Install and replace signs, traffic control devices, and pavement markings.
• Maintain and repair guardrail systems and department facilities/equipment.
• Perform winter maintenance and respond to emergencies.
• Promote safety and provide on-the-job training and direction.
