CarGurus is looking for a Software Development Engineer Intern (Full Stack) to join our engineering team. Depending on team placement-Including International Engineering, Marketing Intelligence, Dealer Sourcing, or Consumer Sell My Car-you will work across full-stack systems to build and enhance consumer-facing and dealer-facing software, data products, inventory sourcing tools, and localized web applications across global markets (US, CA, UK). You will partner with product managers, data analysts, data scientists, and engineers to turn data into impactful user experiences while transforming engineering ideas into production software.
Focused on driving user engagement, dealer growth, and global product capability, you will contribute across backend services, microservices, APIs, data workflows, and user interfaces. You will participate in whiteboard sessions, technical design discussions, code reviews, and team planning in a fast-paced environment that pushes code daily, while learning production software deployment, monitoring, operational best practices, and leveraging modern AI developer workflows under the guidance of experienced engineering mentors.

CarGurus operates on a hybrid working model, and candidates should expect to work out of our Boston, MA office 60% of the time (approximately three days per week).
What You'll Do
Full-Stack Application Development: Build, enhance, and deploy clean, well-tested, and efficient code across full-stack web applications using Java, MySQL, microservices, and modern frontend technologies (JavaScript, TypeScript, React, HTML, CSS, Remix).
Architecture & API Integration: Work across backend services, RESTful APIs, data workflows, and dynamic user interfaces, while building familiarity with software design, quality practices, distributed systems, and performance considerations.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Design: Partner with product managers, data analysts, data scientists, and cross-functional partners on projects from initial concept through implementation; participate in whiteboard sessions, team planning, design conversations, code reviews, and technical documentation.
Data, Experiments & Product Enhancement: Explore data, help improve the accuracy, reliability, and usability of metrics and reporting, and run quick, novel experiments to test new product insights.
AI Tooling & Mentorship: Explore and use modern AI tools within your development workflow to improve productivity, troubleshoot issues, and learn engineering best practices while taking a meaningful project from initial development through a final demo alongside a dedicated mentor.
What You'll Bring
Education & Eligibility: Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, with eligibility to complete a full-time internship.
Core Technical Knowledge: Foundational understanding of Java (or comparable object-oriented languages), algorithms, data structures, complexity analysis, and relational/non-relational databases (SQL/MySQL).
Frontend & Web Integration: Coursework, project, or hands-on experience with frontend technologies (JavaScript, TypeScript, React, HTML, CSS, Remix) and integrating RESTful APIs into frontend applications.
Mindset & Working Style: Curiosity, enthusiasm, and a growth-oriented mindset with the ability to learn quickly, iterate on ideas, ask questions, apply feedback, and thrive both independently and in team environments pushing daily code releases.
Communication & Modern Tooling: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an interest or experience in utilizing AI coding tools and working on data-intensive customer applications.
Bonus Points
Experience with relational or non-relational databases, especially MySQL.
Familiarity with REST or GraphQL APIs, microservices, cloud applications, or basic web application architecture.
Experience writing automated tests, using monitoring/operational tools, or understanding logging and site performance metrics.
Exposure to analytics, experimentation, metrics, reporting, Python, or AI application concepts.
