CarGurus is looking for a Software Development Engineer Intern to join our engineering organization to support the build, personalization, and operation of consumer-facing high-traffic web applications across top-of-funnel surfaces (Homepage, Landing Pages, shared navigation, discovery surfaces) as well as global markets (US, CA & UK). In this role, you will partner with product managers, designers, backend engineers, and platform teams to turn customer needs into production software, make the car shopping experience enjoyable and transparent, and help shoppers find the car they are looking for through personalized experiences.
Focused on driving user engagement and growth, you will build responsive, accessible frontend experiences and work across the full development lifecycle—designing, coding, testing, and deploying features in an environment where work evolves every day. You will strengthen core web applications by implementing scalable JavaScript and TypeScript patterns, reusable UI components, and modern delivery workflows, while playing an active role in improving application performance, reliability, and global feature requirements.
As a Software Development Engineer Intern, you will join an 11-week Summer Internship Program designed to give you hands‑on experience, expand your professional network, and build core industry skills. This full‑time opportunity (40 hours per week) runs from June through August 2027. CarGurus operates on a hybrid working model, and candidates should expect to work out of our Boston, MA office 60% of the time (approximately three days per week).
Product Development & UI: Build, test, review, deploy, and support production features to add new capabilities, personalize user journeys, and improve overall UI using JavaScript, TypeScript, and React.
Lifecycle Engagement: Be deeply engaged in the full development lifecycle—design, code, test, deploy—while translating product and design requirements into thoughtful UI behavior across browser code, server‑rendered routes, loaders, APIs, and shared packages.
Experimentation & Growth: Run A/B tests, experiments, analytics, and performance techniques to improve customer onboarding, registration, and user experience across devices and user states.
Global & Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work across global markets (US, CA, UK) to fulfill distinct localized requirements, participating in technical design, code reviews, debugging, and incident follow‑ups alongside product, design, backend, and platform teams.
Operational Excellence: Improve application performance and reliability by writing automated tests, monitoring real‑time observability metrics, and executing incremental refactoring based on team roadmaps.
Education & Eligibility: Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, with eligibility to complete a full‑time internship.
Technical Fundamentals: Solid foundation in web development fundamentals, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, asynchronous execution, HTTP, state management, and connecting to RESTful APIs.
Modern Framework Experience: Hands‑on experience or project/coursework background building user interfaces with component‑based frameworks (React, Remix, or TypeScript).
Problem Solving & Quality: Keen eye and strong attention to detail for responsive design and accessible UI elements, combined with basic exposure to writing automated tests and diagnosing failures in local/CI environments.
Soft Skills & Collaboration: Collaborative spirit with a growth mindset—eager to tackle complex problems, raise questions, accept constructive feedback, and communicate effectively with team members.
Exposure to modern full‑stack web development concepts through personal projects or coursework using frameworks like Remix, React Router, Node.js, GraphQL, or server‑side rendering.
Familiarity with basic web publishing concepts like SEO‑sensitive pages, canonicalization, structured data, redirects, or content‑managed experiences such as Builder.io or Contentful.
Familiarity with experimentation systems, feature flags, analytics instrumentation, or Core Web Vitals.
Interest in learning how to use logging, browser developer tools, and observability platforms to debug errors and monitor site performance.
