Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, NC is seeking a 2nd shift Custodian to perform routine cleaning and maintenance tasks across North Campus. You will follow instructions, use power washers and vacuums, and keep classrooms and common areas clean and safe for students and staff.

DEFINITION

To perform routine building cleaning tasks; related work as required. This is repetitive manual work requiring efficient performance of simple building cleaning and maintenance duties. An employee in this class works under general supervision on routine recurring assignments, receiving specific instructions on each new or unusual assignment.

  • Receives general supervision from the Supervisor and/or Environmental Tech Lead
  • Exercises no supervision.
ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTION STATEMENTS

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with faculty, supervisors, staff, co-workers, and students.
  • Adhere to the College’s uniform policy by wearing the designated uniform during all scheduled work hours in accordance with departmental standards. As part of the uniform requirement, employees will be issued a College mobile device, which must be kept charged and ready for use at all times during scheduled work hours.
  • Maintaining restrooms, hallways, common areas, classrooms, building entrances, and overhead vents and air filters, including sweeping, mopping, dusting, washing windows and mirrors, and related cleaning tasks.
  • Emptying trash receptacles and transporting waste to designated disposal areas in accordance with College procedures.
  • Providing directions, answering questions, and assisting faculty, staff, students, and visitors to promote a welcoming and well‑maintained campus environment.
  • Operating specialized cleaning equipment, including power washers, backpack vacuums, and floor buffing machines, in accordance with safety and operational guidelines.
  • Identifying and reporting facility maintenance concerns to the appropriate supervisor and handling chemical cleaning agents in compliance with safety regulations and College policy.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, or relocate a minimum of 10 lbs., as required in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Demonstrate basic proficiency in the use of mobile devices and computers, including the ability to send and receive emails and text messages, and utilize standard applications such as Google Sheets, in support of departmental operations.
Other Important Functions
  • May shovel snow
  • May deliver packages and messages.
  • May assist in training new custodial personnel
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of
  • Some knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies and equipment.
Ability To
  • Ability to use cleaning equipment and supplies economically and efficiently
  • Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully within a group

  • Ability to understand and follow basic oral and written directions
  • Communicate concisely and respectfully, both orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work

Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following:

  1. Standing or sitting for extended periods of time

  3. Handling varied tasks simultaneously
  4. Bending, stooping, climbing, or lifting up to 50 pounds, including the relocation of furniture and equipment as needed

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES
Minimum Education/Training
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
Minimum Experience
  • At least 6 months building cleaning experience
Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills
  • One or more years building cleaning experience
