Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VT) is seeking a Custodian responsible for maintaining cleanliness across campus buildings. Duties include cleaning common areas, restrooms, and classrooms, as well as handling emergency cleanups.
Successful candidates should have the ability to operate cleaning equipment, a valid driver's license, and a willingness to work independently. The position requires working hours from 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and may involve overtime during campus emergencies.
This position will report to the Assistant Manager of 2nd & 3rd Shift Custodial Services and is responsible for maintaining established standards of cleanliness and sanitation for interior spaces within assigned education and general assignment buildings across campus. Focused duties include cleaning and disinfecting common high‑touch surfaces, restrooms, hallways, corridors, classrooms, stairwells, elevators, and general interior spaces. Other duties include emergency cleanup, execution of blood‑borne pathogen procedures, floor and window maintenance, operating powered cleaning equipment, trash removal, collecting recycling, and replenishing supplies. This position will report equipment and building repairs and any unsafe and unusual building maintenance issues and is responsible for the care and handling of facilities supplies, equipment, and assigned keys.
This position is designated Emergency Personnel and requires employees to report to work as needed during campus emergencies, holidays, closings, and per supervisor’s instructions.

Overtime Status: Non‑Exempt – Eligible for overtime

Salary Information: 33,280 plus 2,080 shift differential
