Job summary

Housing Authority of the Birmingham District is seeking a Family Self-Sufficiency Specialist to plan, coordinate, and implement FSS and related homeownership programs. You will assist tenants in becoming self-sufficient, assess needs, and maintain relationships with social service providers to connect residents with resources.

The role requires case management experience, HUD guidelines knowledge, and strong computer skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Social Services, Public Administration, or related field.
• Minimum of four (4) years of experience in public housing or social services case management.
• Must obtain Family Self-Sufficiency Specialist Certification within nine (9) months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Provides case management, planning, coordination, and delivery of services that support the Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) and homeownership programs.
• Coordinates the displaced tenant relocation process, performs move assessments, and assists displaced tenants in locating safe and affordable housing.
• Networks with HABD staff and service providers to inform participants of available services and options.
• Identifies obstacles faced by FSS participants and coordinates with partners to offer programs and resources to enhance tenants' quality of life and workforce entry.
• Conducts in-depth assessment of client needs; develops and updates case plans with clients individually or in groups.
• Prepares marketing materials for activities; contacts outside community agencies to increase awareness of HABD programs.
• Provides counseling and mediation services within HUD guidelines.
• Onboards families joining the FSS program; conducts assessments and documents findings and goals.
• Plans and participates in orientations; monitors progress of participants and supports actions.
