Job summary

Harris County Public Library (HCPL) seeks an entry-level Library Specialist I to support daily library operations and frontline patron services at the La Porte branch. You will assist with card registration, circulation tasks, and basic reference, while helping deliver educational and cultural programs for all ages.

You will also engage in community outreach, materials handling, and maintain accurate service records to ensure a welcoming and inclusive learning environment.

Qualifications

• Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Proficient with Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.).
• Proficient with the Internet and Office 365.
• Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and foster teamwork in a diverse environment.
• Ability to work well with public and staff members.
• Must exercise initiative and discretion.

Responsibilities

• Provide courteous frontline customer service to patrons in person, by phone, and online channels.
• Greets patrons, identifies needs, explains services, and connects to staff.
• Performs circulation and patron-account functions in the ILS.
• Registers patrons, updates accounts, handles holds and payments, and maintains records.
• Protects confidentiality of patron information per law and policy.
• Plans and delivers programs for all ages and coordinates outreach.
