Job description

The grade foreman is responsible and accountable to the operations manager. The grade foreman receives daily instructions and project assignment(s) from the general superintendent.

Basic function:

Supervise and direct assigned crew in their activities to rough and fine grade earth and other sub-bases by cutting and filling to meet specifications in an efficient, safe and satisfactory way. As a working foreman, one will continue to perform functions of crew construction while leading the team.

Job duties:

  1. Perform all duties within the guidelines set forth in the policies and procedures manual.
  2. Create an atmosphere whereby subordinates are encouraged to improve their skill and maintain a high level of morale for themselves and other employees; see that crew starts working on time and ensure that they work the number of hours for which they are paid.
  3. Assist the crew in the following areas: using equipment in a safe and proper manner, improving job performance, controlling cost and quality of work, increasing productivity, improving communications, and housekeeping of the project.
  4. Participate in the periodic evaluation of all assigned personnel, discussing their contributions to the company, their development, and possible pay adjustments.
  5. Supervise and direct the activities of assigned personnel in the performance of their duties, directing and instructing them in the proper operation techniques, use, and maintenance of equipment.
  6. Ensure all new personnel receive proper orientation to acquaint them with the company policies, safety, and their job responsibilities.
  7. Develop a cooperative working relationship with all operations and project managers, project superintendents, and other foremen.
  8. Cooperate with the human resources department and risk management department, being knowledgeable as to all aspects of EEO and safety responsibilities, comply with these requirements and insist upon compliance among all subordinates.
  9. Conduct a continuous evaluation of the following items: cost and yields, material yields, plants and schedules, salaries promotions, job assignments, equipment needs, personnel needs, on-the-job training program, job safety, security and crime prevention needs, quality control, and related any problems, changes or recommendations to the general superintendent.
  10. Ensure all work undertaken complies with all local laws and ordinances concerning construction and related activities.
  11. Maintain close contact and a good working relationship with the general public, engineers, inspectors, and customers to facilitate job progress and to promote a positive company image, develop a courteous and considerate attitude of assigned personnel towards these groups.
  12. Perform equipment inspections, request maintenance and repair crews as needed.
  13. Make out all required daily reports, verify their correctness, and transmit promptly to the general superintendent.
  14. Maintain a daily log recording important conversations and events which could be used for future reference.

Knowledge: Use of mathematics together with the use of drawings, specifications, charts and tables as well as the use of various types of measuring instruments.

Experience: Over one year and up to three years to become familiar with checking grade, various earth materials, reading stakes, cutting slopes, ditches and other aspects of rough and fine grade operations as well as related supervisory responsibilities.
