Job Description

The successful candidate will supervise and direct assigned crew in their activities to rough and fine grade earth and other sub-bases by cutting and filling to meet specifications in an efficient, safe, and satisfactory way.

Job Duties
  • Perform all duties within the guidelines set forth in the policies and procedures manual.
  • Operate Motorgrader to fine grade specifications.
  • Create an atmosphere whereby subordinates are encouraged to improve their skill and maintain a high level of morale for themselves and other employees see that crew starts working on time and ensure that they work the number of hours for which they are paid.
  • Direct and assist crew in the following areas; using equipment in a safe and proper manner, improving job performance, controlling cost and quality of work, increasing productivity, improving communications, and housekeeping of project.
  • Participate in the periodic evaluation of all assigned personnel, discussing their contributions to the company, their development and possible pay adjustments.
  • Supervise and direct the activities of assigned personnel in the performance of their duties, directing and instructing them in the proper operation technique, use and maintenance of equipment.
  • See that all new personnel receive proper orientation to acquaint them with the company, policies, safety and their job responsibilities.
  • Develop a cooperative working relationship with all operations and project managers, project superintendents and other foreman.
  • Cooperates with the human resources department and risk management department being knowledgeable as to all aspects of EEO and safety responsibilities, comply with these requirements and insist upon compliance among all subordinates.
  • Conduct a continuous evaluation of the following items; cost and yields, material yields, plants and schedules, salaries promotions, job assignments, equipment need, personnel needs, on-the – job training program, job safety, security and crime prevention needs, quality control, related any problems, changes or recommendations to the general superintendent.
  • Ensure all work undertaken complies with all local laws and ordinances concerning construction and related activities.
  • Maintain close contact and a good working relationship with the general public, engineers, inspectors, and customers to facilitate job progress and to promote a positive company image, develop a courteous and considerate attitude of assigned personnel towards these groups.
  • Perform equipment inspections, request maintenance and repair crews as needed.
  • Make out all required daily reports, verify their correctness, and transmit promptly to the general superintendent.
  • Maintain a daily log recording important conversations and events which could be used for future reference.
  • Maintain professional conduct at all times.
  • Complete all assigned Learning Management System training initiatives.
Experience & Knowledge
  • Over one year and up to three years to become familiar with checking grade, various earth materials, reading stakes, cutting slopes, ditches and other aspects of rough and fine grade operations as well as related supervisory responsibilities.
  • Use of mathematics together with the use of drawings, specifications, charts and tables as well as the use of various types of measuring instruments

Position requires integrity and discretion to safeguard confidential data such as cost information, wage information, personnel information /actions and other confidential information shared with supervisory personnel where disclose could have an adverse internal effect and /or a minor external effect.

Contact with Others

Regular contact with subordinates, other departments furnishing or obtaining information or reports, discussing subjects related to projects or other supervisory matters which require tact to avoid friction and obtain cooperation, position also requires contacts outside the company where improper handling could affect company objectives or others perception of company.

Complexity of Duties

Diversified duties involving substantial knowledge of a specialized field, position requires the use of judgment to plan, perform and make decisions as to the sequence of setup, operations, processes and to analyze facts and circumstances surrounding problems or transactions and in the determination of actions to be taken within limits of standard or accepted practice, position requires general knowledge of related organization policies and procedures and their correct application.

Supervision Received

The grade foreman is responsible and accountable to the operations manager, the grade foreman receives daily instructions and project assignment(s) from the general superintendent.

Character & Scope of Supervision

Position is responsible for the immediate supervision over unit/ crew (at least two but seldom over ten) where 50% or more of time is spent assigning, reviewing, checking work, and eliminating difficulties under standardized procedures.

Errors

Foreman position is first to recognin and prevent errors, probable errors caused or left undiscovered could be serious involving losses to the company due to rework, waste of material, damage to equipment or loss of client or general public goodwill and safety.

Physical Activity & Demand
  • Position requires the ability to climb onto machines, to stoop, kneel, crouch, lift and grasp objects. Position requires standing and walking for sustained periods of time and/or long distances. Position requires ability to express or exchange ideas by the spoken word, as well as have the ability to perceive sounds and receive detailed information through oral communications.
  • Moderate physical effort required. Frequently lifting or moving average weight material (over 25 pounds) or occasionally lifting or moving heavy weight materials (over 60 pounds) less than 20% of time is spent in a physically demanding role.
Mental & Visual Demand

Continuous mental and visual attention required overseeing job, personnel, and equipment assigned. Position requires constant alertness to job activities.

Working Conditions

Somewhat disagreeable working conditions with continuous exposure to dust, dirt, seasonal temperature variances and machine noise with several elements continuously present to the extent of being objectionable.

Injuries, should they occur, could result in partial incapacitation due to loss of arm leg, eye or severe health hazard.
