Job summary

HDR, an employee-owned firm, seeks a Freight Railroad Track Intern in Omaha to apply engineering methods to track design and supporting facilities for freight clients. You will work under a senior engineer to check drawings, develop material lists, and calculate quantities while networking through mentoring programs.

Requirements include enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate engineering program, attention to detail, strong communication, and basic MS Office skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in applying standard engineering techniques for track design and supporting facilities.
  • Check drawings and calculations under a senior engineer’s supervision.
  • Develop material lists, calculate quantities, and review submittals.
  • Engage with mentoring programs and participate in young professionals activities.
  • Travel to jobsites or field work within the U.S. as needed.

In the role of a Freight Railroad Track Intern, we'll count on you to:
  • Gain real-world experience on exciting projects by applying standard engineering techniques and procedures related to the design of track, and supporting facilities for our various freight railroad clients
  • Work under the guidance and direct supervision of a senior-level Engineer to assist in checking drawings and calculations, developing material lists and calculating quantities, reviewing construction submittals, and use of specialized software
  • Connect with recent college graduates and our company leaders through mentoring and young professionals’ programs
  • Position may require travel and/or field work within the U.S.
  • Perform other duties as needed
  • This position is contingent upon the successful completion of background check and drug screening. Following hire, the role is subject to random and reasonable-cause drug and alcohol testing
  • Have a valid license to operate motor vehicles in accordance with applicable state law
  • This position is subject to a preemployment drug test
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prefer 2+ years completed toward degree with 3.0+ GPA
  • Demonstrated knowledge of software packages related to field of study/industry, such as MicroStation and/or AutoCAD
  • Preference given to local candidates
Required Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate Engineering program
  • Attention to detail
  • Possess strong problem-solving and communication skills
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills
