Job summary

HDR is seeking a Freight Railroad Bridge Intern in the U.S. to gain hands-on experience in bridge design for freight railroad clients. You will work under a senior engineer and contribute to drawings, calculations, and submittals using industry software.

Preferred candidates are enrolled in an engineering program with 2+ years toward a degree and a GPA of 3.0+. This internship offers mentoring, networking with leaders, and potential travel within the U.S.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate Engineering program.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of engineering software such as MicroStation and AutoCAD.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills.

Responsibilities

  • Gain real-world experience applying engineering techniques to bridge design for freight railroad clients.
  • Assist senior engineers in checking drawings, calculations, material lists, and submittals using specialized software.
  • Mentoring and networking with recent grads and company leaders.
  • Travel or field work within the U.S. may be required.
  • Perform additional duties as needed.
  • Background check and drug screening are required after hire.
  • Valid driver's license is required.

In the role of a Freight Railroad Bridge Intern, we'll count on you to:
  • Gain real-world experience on exciting projects by applying standard engineering techniques and proceduresrelated to the design of bridge, and supporting facilities for our various freight railroad clients
  • Work under the guidance and direct supervision of a senior-level Engineer to assistin checking drawings and calculations, developing material lists and calculating quantities, reviewing construction submittals, and use of specialized software
  • Connect with recent college graduates and our company leaders through mentoring and young professionals’ programs
  • Position may require travel and/or field work within the U.S.
  • Perform other duties as needed
  • This position is contingent upon the successful completion of background check and drug screening. Following hire, the role is subject to random and reasonable-cause drug and alcohol testing
  • Have a valid license to operate motor vehicles in accordance with applicable state law
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prefer 2+ years completed toward degree with 3.0+ GPA
  • Demonstrated knowledge of software packages related to field of study/industry, such as MicroStation and/or AutoCAD
  • Preference given to local candidates
Required Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate Engineering program
  • Possess strong problem-solving and communication skills
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills
