Job summary

Gofractional is seeking a Fractional Controller to manage day-to-day accounting and financial reporting for a nonprofit or small business client base in Columbus, Ohio. This 1099 contractor role focuses on GAAP-compliant financial statements, cash flow forecasting, and internal controls.

You will collaborate with leadership to develop annual budgets, provide forecasts, and offer insights on pricing, fundraising, and operational efficiency.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• Must live in the Columbus Metropolitan area.
• 5+ years of Controller experience, with leadership experience in nonprofits, small businesses, or both.
• Proficiency with accounting software (QuickBooks, Xero, Sage Intacct, NetSuite, etc.) and Excel.

Responsibilities

• Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and bank reconciliations.
• Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in GAAP and organizational standards.

Fractional Controller

This is a 1099 independent contractor opportunity.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

• Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and bank reconciliations.
• Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in compliance with GAAP and organizational standards.
• Maintain accurate cash flow forecasting, budget-to-actual analysis, and variance reporting.
• Ensure proper tracking of revenue, expenses, and—when applicable—restricted/unrestricted funds or grant allocations.

Budgeting & Forecasting

• Lead the development of annual budgets in collaboration with leadership.
• Provide timely forecasts to support growth, sustainability, and funding or profitability goals.
• Advise leadership on financial scenarios, risks, and opportunities to inform decision-making.

Compliance & Controls

• Establish and maintain effective internal controls, policies, and financial procedures.
• Ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations:
  • Nonprofit: IRS Form 990, grant/donor reporting, nonprofit GAAP.
  • Small Business: Tax filings, banking covenants, and industry-specific requirements.
• Support annual audits, reviews, and tax preparation as needed.

Advisory & Leadership

• Serve as a strategic partner to the Executive Director/CEO, Board of Directors, CFO or ownership team.
• Provide financial insights on program costs, pricing strategies, fundraising initiatives, and operational efficiency.
• Train or guide staff and board/owners on financial literacy and performance drivers.
• Collaborate with development/fundraising staff (nonprofit) or sales/operations teams (small business) to align financial management with organizational goals.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• Must live in the Columbus Metropolitan area.
• 5+ years of Controller experience, with leadership experience in nonprofits, small businesses, or both.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, with an understanding of both nonprofit fund accounting or willingness to learn and small business profitability metrics.
• Proven ability to manage multiple priorities on a part-time/fractional basis.
• Proficiency with accounting software (QuickBooks, Xero, Sage Intacct, NetSuite, etc.) and Excel.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and analytical skills.
