The Controller provides strategic and operational leadership for the finance and accounting functions, ensuring compliance, accuracy, and efficiency across all entities. This role reports directly to the CFO and manages a team of accounting professionals to support the organization’s mission and financial sustainability.
Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor the accounting and finance teams, overseeing performance, professional development, and goal setting.
- Define clear roles, responsibilities, and growth opportunities for team members.
- Ensure consistent implementation of accounting policies and internal controls across all entities.
- Oversee annual independent audits, targeting unmodified opinions and no findings.
Accounting Operations
- Direct daily accounting functions, including accounts payable, receivable, payroll, and debt management.
- Oversee the monthly and annual close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Maintain the chart of accounts, general ledger integrity, and documentation standards.
- Ensure GAAP compliance and adherence to nonprofit, government, and grant requirements.
- Supervise grants and program accounting to ensure spending aligns with budgets and funding restrictions.
- Prepare and deliver timely financial statements, reports, and dashboards for leadership and the Board.
- Support the CFO in forecasting, budgeting, and financial strategy.
- Monitor cash flow and liquidity; develop forecasting and cash management tools.
- Provide variance analysis and actionable insights to inform decision-making.
Audit, Tax, & Compliance
- Manage annual financial audits, agreed-upon procedures (AUPs), and regulatory reviews.
- Oversee tax filings, including IRS Form 990 and all required state and local reports.
- Stay current on evolving accounting standards, nonprofit regulations, and compliance risks.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- CPA required.
- Significant experience in public accounting; prior Controller or equivalent leadership experience preferred.
- Deep technical expertise in GAAP, audits, and compliance.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- Experience with grants management, nonprofit, or education sector finance preferred.
Compensation
Compensation: $165,000
Salary is based on a range of factors that include relevant experience, knowledge, skills, other job-related qualifications.
