Job description

SeriesUp is a team of seasoned finance leaders who specialize in working with early-stage, venture-backed startups to help them build institutional-grade financial operations and reach their growth goals. Whether it's navigating a seed round, preparing for a Series A or B, or managing a complex exit, our fractional CFOs bring real operator experience to every engagement. SeriesUp operates an embedded team model, with a combination of VPs, Controllers, and Bookkeepers to support client engagements as needed.

We don't just advise, we embed. Our team works alongside clients as true stakeholders, getting deep into the business to deliver strategy and execution that moves the needle. Our team is fully remote, with clients spanning the country. Expect 2–3 in-person team meetups per year, plus travel for client meetings and board presentations as needed.

The Opportunity

*Update October 2026 - We are always accepting applications for strong candidates, but not actively targeting a full-time hire immediately.

This is not a typical in-house finance role. As a Fractional CFO at SeriesUp, you'll work across a portfolio of high-growth startups, providing more career variety, faster skill development, and broader impact than any single company could offer. You'll operate as the senior-most finance leader for each client from day one, partnering directly with founders and boards to set financial strategy and drive execution across multiple engagements simultaneously.

You will manage a book of business across multiple client engagements at a time, balancing deep, ongoing involvement in each with the variety of a portfolio model. Total expected commitment is full-time (~40 hrs/week). Client stages range from seed through Series B.

If you're a high-performing finance leader ready to leverage deep startup experience across a dynamic portfolio and be compensated at competitive market rates, this role was built for you.

This role also comes with a growth mandate: beyond serving existing clients, you're expected to actively build your own book of business by leveraging your professional network and pitching SeriesUp's services to prospective clients. New business you originate comes with a rev-share incentive.

Who we’re looking for

Our ideal candidate is a seasoned finance leader with a strong accounting foundation and deep FP&A experience, who is looking for the opportunity to work in an embedded, portfolio-based role and use their skillset to help startups build a strong financial foundation. They should possess a deep knowledge of cash flow management, budgeting, capital planning, and financial forecasting, along with experience managing board and investor relationships. Their relationship skills should be above average, with the ability to work closely across all levels of client partners, including founders and boards. We’re looking for someone who is willing to work alongside clients, immersing themselves in the business in order to provide the best possible results as a stakeholder, not just an advisor. Strong networking skills and the confidence to pitch SeriesUp's services to prospective clients are just as important as technical expertise — this is a role for someone who wants to grow the book alongside the clients they serve, not just execute within it.

Key responsibilities
  • Serve as the senior-most finance leader for each client, setting overall financial strategy and priorities
  • Own the relationship with the board and investors, preparing and presenting board-ready financial packages and leading board meetings
  • Lead fundraising strategy and execution, including positioning, materials, negotiations, and close
  • Drive capital allocation, cash runway planning, and scenario-based forecasting to guide major growth and pricing decisions
  • Build and oversee the finance function, including hiring, managing, and mentoring in-house or fractional finance talent
  • Ensure accurate, timely financial reporting and a disciplined monthly close process
  • Select and implement the right financial systems and processes as clients scale (e.g., NetSuite, Sage Intacct, QuickBooks)
  • Lead due diligence and financial workstreams for M&A, exits, or debt financing
  • Act as a trusted strategic partner to the CEO and a true member of the leadership team
  • Participate in business development by pitching SeriesUp's services to prospective clients and growing the client base through your own professional network, with a rev-share incentive on new business you originate
Skills & experience
  • 12+ years of progressive finance experience, including significant time as a CFO, VP of Finance, or senior finance leader at a venture-backed startup
  • Demonstrated experience owning a fundraise (Series A or beyond) or M&A/exit process from the finance seat
  • Direct experience presenting to and managing relationships with boards and investors
  • Strong FP&A background: financial modeling, scenario planning, capital and cash flow planning
  • Experience building and leading finance teams, including hiring and managing accounting or FP&A talent
  • Hands-on ERP/accounting system implementation or management experience
  • Excel mastery; advanced financial modeling skills required
  • Exceptional communication skills, able to translate complex financials for boards, investors, and non-finance audiences
  • Strong networking and business development instincts, with the confidence and track record to pitch SeriesUp's services and win new client relationships
What Strong Candidates Will Have on Their Resume:
  • Served as CFO or top finance leader for a venture-backed startup through a period of significant growth or a major transaction
  • Led a fundraise from strategy through close, including investor materials, negotiations, and diligence
  • Presented financial results and strategy directly to a board of directors on a recurring, ongoing basis
  • Built and led a finance team, including hiring and developing accounting or FP&A staff
  • Directed an ERP or accounting system implementation or migration (QuickBooks, NetSuite, Sage Intacct, etc.)
  • Managed cash flow and capital strategy through a period of rapid growth or capital constraints
  • Led or played a central finance role in an M&A process, asset sale, or venture debt financing transaction
  • Generated new business for their firm or practice through their own network, referrals, or direct pitching to prospective clients
What Success Looks Like
30 Days

Fully onboarded onto your first client engagements with a deep understanding of each client's financial state, strategic priorities, and board and investor dynamics.

90 Days

Established yourself as a trusted member of each client's leadership team, with a clear financial strategy and roadmap in place, and owned at least one full monthly close cycle per client.

6–12 Months

Delivered measurable impact on a strategic priority for each client — a completed raise, a scaled finance function, or improved cash runway — and are recognized by clients and their boards as an integral, trusted part of the leadership team. Brought new business to the company and continue to network and raise the profile of SeriesUp.
