Title: Fractional CFO (Strategy-focused)
Location: Remote (US Based)
Employment Type: Fractional (1099)
Compensation: $150.00/hr.
About VisionPath CFO
VisionPath CFO empowers owner-led businesses, generally between $5 million and $50 million in revenue, with clear, strategic financial guidance to drive sustainable growth. We serve a variety of industries, including professional services, project-based firms, nonprofits, and multi-entity organizations, franchisors and healthcare.
What sets us apart isn't technical depth; most firms have that. It's that we say things in plain language. An owner who has never read a balance sheet should leave our meetings knowing what to do on Monday morning. Every CFO who works with us is held to that standard.
About the Role:
We're looking for a fractional CFO who enjoys building trusted relationships with business owners, teaching financial concepts clearly, and turning financial insight into action across the organization.
You’ll serve as the senior finance voice for a portfolio of owner-led businesses, building strategy with owners rather than presenting it to them.
In addition to developing financial strategy, you will act as a trusted advisor, coaching and leading the clients through difficult conversations and decisions. This is a "whole house" CFO role: you help owners understand their numbers and act on them, and your work often reaches department leaders and frontline staff whose decisions shape the results.
Your portfolio will mix larger clients who need substantial weekly involvement with smaller ones that need fewer hours but the same ownership and care.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the client relationship as their primary finance strategic partner. You'll build trust through a deep understanding of their business challenges, strategic goals, and financial aspirations.
- You’ll set a regular communication rhythm, and meet with owners consistently. It’s expected you’ll stay engaged between deliverables, not just during a project or a crisis. A client should never have to wonder what their CFO is working on.
- Act as an advisor and educator. Explain financial information in terms a non-finance owner can use, then help them work through the decision.
- Adapt your communication to each client. Build real rapport and read what each owner needs. Some want to be coached toward their own conclusion; others want a clear, direct recommendation. You can do both, and you know when to shift.
- Engage the whole organization. Work with owners and leadership, and also with department leaders and frontline staff when their day-to-day decisions affect the financial outcome.
- Build financial models that support critical decisions: pricing changes, contract economics, acquisition math, capital structure, and exit readiness.
- Architect the reporting and metrics framework for each client. Determine what the business should be watching and why, then build the reporting to support it.
- Manage relationships with external parties who touch the numbers: lenders, advisors, brokers, buy-side and sell-side contacts, and outside CPAs.
- Have difficult conversations with clients about hard truths and financial realities. Maintain the relationship and trust through these conversations.
- Collaborate with the VisionPath CFO team through shadowing meetings and weekly CEO touch-bases.
- Adapt to evolving client needs by taking on additional responsibilities and strategic initiatives as they arise.
Requirements
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to teach financial concepts to owners who don’t have a finance background.
- You enjoy teaching. You get energy from helping an owner finally understand their numbers, and you stay patient when a concept needs explaining a second or third time.
- 10+ years of senior finance leadership, including CFO experience in a corporate setting.
- Prior Fractional CFO experience, managing multiple client relationships at the same time.
- Comfortable working with people at every level of an organization, from owners and leadership to department leads and frontline staff.
- Direct experience with owner-led businesses under $50 million in revenue.
- Direct experience building financial models for strategic decisions.
- M&A, capital structure, or exit advisory experience.
- Track record managing relationships with external stakeholders: lenders, investors, advisors, or board members.
- Experience conducting board-level financial reviews or C-suite advisory work.
- Deal structuring and financial engineering capability.
- Can independently develop financial strategy and present to ownership.
- Responsive and timely in communications with clients and the internal team.
- Must have a computer, stable internet connection, and professional E&O insurance.
- Candidates should operate as a 1099 independent contractor and have their own LLC.
